Chapter 2~
Journal Entry 2~June 27th, 1987
5:54P.M~It must feel good not to feel pain anymore.
~
It's been a week since Sydney's disappearance. It was almost like a monster had taken her. Nobody had seen anyone else in the marshes that day. Over the course of the week I had been questioned by the police about Sydney. Of course I told them all I knew, but it wasn't much to their aid. Since then I have decided to never take my necklace off again.
~
I slipped onto the couch. "I can't find the remote" I sighed while reaching my hand down the cushions. I searched once more and then I finally found it. I switched on the tv to see baby shows. My mother must have turned these on for Jenna earlier. After all, it was nearly 11 P.M. I flipped through the channels. I had an urge to look at the news, so I turned it on. I read the headline. "CHILD REMAINS MISSING A HEAD FOUND AT THE BOTTOM OF THE LAKE OF THE SORROWFUL''. I tingled in fear. The knocking on the window was getting worse.
~
"I can't believe we're doing this," I spoke as we walked down the quiet road. "It's not a big deal, Delta," Adelyn said. "Well I agree with Delta, I don't know if this is a good idea" Ace said. "Will you all shut up!" Alexis yelled, her long black hair swaying in the wind. We all went silent and continued walking. In her hands was the ouija board we were taking to the Madden household. The Maddens had died long ago, by unknown causes. I clutched my necklace at the thought.
~
Vera delved in her backpack for the book about the Madden household. We stood on the porch, waiting for her to speak. She read aloud "the key is hidden where nature grows". "What does that mean?" Ace asked. "Are you stupid?" Alexis yelled before I could speak. "It obviously means it's in the grass," she said in a low tone. "No, it actually means it's in the flowerbed..." I whispered. She stared at me like she was going to kill me. Everyone started exploding with laughter.
~
The problem was, there were two flower beds. I got partnered with Vera. Alexis got paired with Ace. "They're definitely going to argue the whole time" I chuckled to Vera as we walked toward the west wing. "Yeah" she laughed. "You check that side, I'll check this side" I said. "Okay, I'll tell you if I find it," she replied. I walked over towards the left side of the flower bed. I dug through the flowers into the dirt. Promptly, I hid a hard box. "Hey Vera I found something!" I excitedly yelled. "What!?" she yelled as she ran over. "I found a box that doesn't have a lock" I said while trying to pry it open. "It wont open," I said angrily. "I'll go get the others," Vera said.
~
Everyone came running over. "So it isn't opening?" Alexis said. "Nope, maybe we can use a hammer or something?" I replied. "Good idea! But where can we get a hammer?" Ace said. "Maybe the shed if it's open?" Vera replied. "We should try that," I said to Vera. We all ran through the pine fields towards the back of the mansion. The shed door was shut like we thought. I walked to the door to try and budge it open. After a few tugs and more help, it finally swung open. It was a misty dirty shed that smelt like death. "I'll go," I said while coughing. I walked inside regretting my decision. Flies buzzed around my ears. I turned on my flashlight and it revealed a severed head. I dropped my flashlight. There was blood everywhere!
~
There was a hammer in the severed head. I did what I had to do. I had seen many corpses before, so I erased my fear and reached down for my flashlight. I spotted a cloth hanging from a hook on the wall. I reached for it and nearly fell. "Don't screw this up" I whispered to myself. I regained my balance then grabbed it. I wiped off the blood, they would notice it. I felt like I was covering up a crime.
~
"I found one" I said walking out. "Let's go then!" Alexis said. We raced back down to the box. We hit the box over and over again until it cracked. A small key was buried inside the box's fabric. We tore through it. I examined the house from a distance. It honestly looked like a typical old abandoned house. "Come on Delta!" "Alexis yelled. My head snapped towards them and saw them already standing on the porch, Alexis of course tapping her foot impatiently.
