Gray arrived back at VILE the next day, opting for a leisurely 2-stop flight home to give him time to get his thoughts in order, and yes, maybe replay the events that had transpired the other day a couple times. Now, he was in the infamous Academy Building, strolling down the halls whilst humming the tune of some Opera he used to light back during his days as a junior electrician. No matter how used to it he was, the familiar green lighting of the Academy was unsettling as usual.

As he approached the Faculty Room, Countess Cleo's Egyptian-British accent caught his attention. "--I don't understand why you just didn't have him aim to kill her like back in Paris."

Well. It looked like they were discussing him.

"You want revenge on Blacksheep, do you not, Countess?"

"Of course, Gunnar, but why-"

"And you agree that Crackle's loyalty to VILE is up for debate?"

"Yes? The only reason I voted against having him mind-wiped was for Saira's sake. I'd have had him dropped back from whatever orphanage he crawled out of in an instant, but you know she has a soft spot for the boy."

"Exactly why I believe this is the best method. To kill off young Blacksheep so soon would be too easy. Real revenge must also be psychological. And what better way to test Crackle's loyalties than to ask him to torture his former best friend?"

"I suppose, I'm beginning to see your point. But how do we know he went through with-"

Gray chose that exact moment to walk in, causing both teachers to halt their conversation.

"Ah, Crackle, you've returned," Maelstrom said, acknowledging his presence with a thin lipped smile.

"Countess, Professor." He gave them nods of respect, approaching the faculty counter.

"Everything went smoothly, I hope?" Cleo inquired, as if she wasn't just discussing his worth to the academy only moments earlier.

Gray dipped his head, licking away the dryness on his lips. "All to plan."

"Bellum," Maelstrom said into his comm. "Bring the device, please."

For one tense moment, Gray kept waiting for his mentor to appear with the infamous memory wiper. His fists balled up instinctively at his sides. The Aussie would not go down without a fight.

Dr. Bellum materialized from the side entrance, a strange looking contraption that was decidedly NOT the memory wiping device, much to Gray's relief, in her hands.

She flashed him a toothy grin, coming to press a set of wires to his elbow.

"To answer your previous inquiry, Countess-" Maelstrom began, stroking his fingers together eerily. "We have a fool-proof method of telling a truth from a lie."

Alarms flared in Gray's brain. A lie detector. They would know he didn't do it, that he didn't punish-

Wait. Punish. Vividly, his and Carmen's sexual activities came to mind. Perhaps he did punish her, albeit in a different and far more pleasurable way...

"Crackle." Maelstrom turned back to him. "I'm going to ask you this one time, and one time only. Your fate at VILE depends on it, so answer carefully."

Gray nodded, breathing in.

Maelstrom leaned forward, pale eyes narrowing at him. "Did you go see Carmen Sandiego?"

"Yes."

"And," Here came the million dollar question. "Did you punish her?"

Gray looked the Professor in the eyes, gaze steely and unafraid. "Yes. I did."
