A week later, Yangyang rode his skateboard down to the same tree. The spot was empty which made him raise his eyebrows. He waited for an hour but Shuhua did not show up. A little annoyed, Yangyang decided to go off on his own. However, he stopped midway on his way to the express station.
"Yangyang!" a young girl with dark brown shoulder length hair ran up to him. Yangyang halted his skateboard and caught it with his hand. She wore light green pants with a white crop top. Yangyang guessed that Shuhua had changed her style to not get noticed by anyone. She had cut her hair so there would be bangs that covered her forehead. In his opinion, it wasn't too different though, but that didn't matter right now.
"Shuhua, where have you been?" he asked.
"Oh, sorry about being late. Something came up."
"It's okay, let's go now."
"We're going to the express station?" the girl asked.
"Yeah," Yangyang glanced at her with a confused expression.
Was she not listening when I explained the plan to her?
Once they boarded the train, Yangyang did not hesitate to put on his headphones. He was surprised by Shuhua once again. She didn't wear any headphones and calmly scrolled through her phone. He didn't know she had a phone either. After a few hours, they got off the train and took a bus to the university. They went through the front gate and took the stairs to the left wing.
"You should wait outside. I'll get the pass to access the storage underground," Yangyang whispered and pulled out his keys.
"The pass isn't in Room A, it's in Room B," Shuhua handed him a new set of keys.
Yangyang raised an eyebrow but put his set of keys away. The young girl gestured to the door a few feet away and Yangyang walked towards it. With each step, he grew more suspicious of Shuhua; he was curious how she knew the layout of the university? How did she have keys to any room in this building? Yangyang slowly opened the door to Room B and stepped inside. The walls around him were huge and plain. Tables were lined up in neat and perfect rows. Yangyang left the door open in case he needed to make an emergency run out of the room. He started searching through the room for the pass. Minutes later, Yangyang heard footsteps in the room. He ducked and hid under one of the tables. Taking a glance at the door, he noticed that Shuhua had locked the door.
No, not Shuhua. She would never do this.
This girl wasn't Shuhua to begin with.
Yangyang yelled at himself -- not out loud but in his mind -- for believing the stranger but refocused himself back to the sound of the footsteps that grew louder each minute.
"Yangyang, stop hiding. I know you're under the table," a deep voice announced.
The brown haired boy hesitated but stepped out in the light. He recognized that voice; how could he not? It was Liu Yuting, his one and only brother.
"It's been a while," Yuting grinned. "I haven't seen you since last summer."
Yangyang glanced back at the door hoping to escape but the girl leaned against it without the intent of letting him go out. She grinned proudly at Yangyang who frowned back.
"What brings you here, my dear brother?" Yuting stepped closer, maintaining eye contact with his younger sibling.
"Nothing much, I should get going now," the brown haired male stepped backwards towards the door but he knew it was no use. Yuting wore a smug look on his face as he motioned at the corner of the walls. Suddenly, a bunch of men who wore navy blue suits jumped out. Out of the corner of his eyes, Yangyang noticed they had a golden badge with a sphinx engraved on it. It was no surprise to him since he knew that Yuting was working with Sphinx M corporation. Next thing he knew, Yangyang was cornered and outnumbered. The boy gulped nervously. He was so close to achieving his goal and yet now it feels so far away. Yangyang's shoulders slumped in defeat as he exhaled a sigh. He knew getting the pass was now impossible thanks to his brother's presence (unless he wanted to reveal his plan which he would never do in a million years). The men grabbed his hands to keep him in place.
The pair of dark brown eyes bounced around the room in a hurry for a solution until they landed on a window. His chest rose as he took in a deep breath; hope filled him once again. Yangyang's lips curved upwards and his eyes lit up like a lightbulb. Yuting noticed his brother's expression change which made him clench his jaw. Right when the older sibling was about to send another order, Yangyang strongly kicked the guard holding his right arm. His fist attacked the stomach of the guard on his left which made the man lose his balance and let go of Yangyang's left arm. The other men tried to catch the brown haired boy but it led to no success. Yangyang had pushed through them all and opened up the window at the back of the room. He unzipped the front pocket of his backpack and retrieved a long and thick rope. Earlier, Yangyang had contemplated to himself about carrying this rope with him but now he felt thankful to himself. Without it, escape would've been even more impossible. The boy worked fast: he attached the rope to the windowsill, swung the backpack over his shoulder, quickly scanned outside the window, and then jumped out while holding onto the thick rope.
It all happened so fast that Yangyang didn't have time to take care of precautions. He didn't have a perfect landing but at least no bones were broken, fractured, or relocated. His knees and elbows bled a little but he could take care of it later. The boy let go of the rope and dashed towards the park beside the university. For now, he needed to be as far away from his brother and his men as possible.
A girl jumped in front of Yangyang which startled him. Her light brown hair softly landed right below her shoulder and she wore a light pink flower clip. This time Yangyang was sure that it was his friend Shuhua.
"Yangyang! Here you are!" She grabbed his hand and continued running through the park.
"Shuhua!" Yangyang exclaimed. "Where have you been?"
"No time to explain, we have to go."
"But--" Shuhua stopped and looked into Yangyang's eyes "--where are we going?"
"Yangyang, I'll explain everything once we get there."
