Time had passed and their relationship had grown as much as it could. Winter filled her days with reading and tidying. Many days she would come along with Emerson at work.

Emerson adored Winter, there were no words to describe the ethereal nature of her soul.

But time is not promised, one of the reasons for Emerson feeling as if he couldn't leave her alone for too long. Winter was no doubt his only hope, and with that, his sole reason for existence.

His past continued to shadow his heart. Some nights he would stay up holding Winter, because he knew if he allowed himself to sleep; it would only end in terror.

Emerson didn't want to have a nightmare around her, maybe it sounded like it would hurt his pride- his strength.

Those were nothing to be prideful about in the presence of Winter. The unearthly beauty was the strongest of mankind.

His baby.

It was because he didn't want to scare her. Emerson knew the second she would see him having nightmare, she'd panic and try to help him. He would rather suffer a thousand deaths than be the cause of her pain.

Thinking of the times he had involuntarily mistreated Winter, it made him physically sick.

He had finally made it downstairs to read with Winter. His overthinking had been the cause of him losing precious minutes with her.

Winter had picked a classic. Of Mice and Men. She pulled her blanket over herself as loud, but gentle, footsteps were audibly noticeable from the stairs.

"Baby, you ready?" Emerson had spoken. His voice was so perfect, at least that's what Winter had thought.

"Of course I am ready! I have been waiting for you the entire time!" She exclaimed with giggles as Emerson made his way to the sofa.

"Who do you think you're talking to babydoll?" Emerson teased her.

Winter gasped as she was lifted off the couch and into the air. She instantly let out a string of laughter.

"Put me down! Emerson, please put me down." Winter squealed in the pleasant joy that filled the air. Emerson hiked her higher up on his shoulder, his warm body trying to be serious.

"Say you're sorry, and I'll put you down." Emerson explained to the girl in his arms.

"No!" She yelled, as Emerson started tickling her sides. "Stop!" Winter shrieked.

Emerson let out a deep laugh from within his wide chest. Winter apologized quickly, Emerson had steadied her feet on the tile floor.

Winter loved his playful side, this was turning out to be one of the things she loved best about Emerson. Emerson watched as the beauty in front of him tried to catch her breath. Winter's blonde hair was perfectly messy, the light freckles beginning to show more from the spring sun, brought light to her face. Though her eyes were truly Emerson's favorite, the trees of her soul, the way he would describe them.

Winter stood on her tippy toes, wrapping her arms around her big beast. Though if anyone asked her, he's her big teddy bear.

"I love you, love, love, love, you!" Her face snuggled into his warm embrace. Emerson held her close.

Nobody.

Nothing.

He would protect her with his life, it was truly the only thing he had left.

Carrying a very sleepy Winter up the stairs of his house, he was about to pass out from exhaustion. He would lay with her, until she was fully asleep.
