Jerry's father was a family oriented man who cared only for his children after his wife died a short time after having their second child, Bethany. He was a very forgiving man and was overjoyed when he discovered his son back on his doorstep with a new friend and a new sister for Bethany.

It wasn't long before soldiers visited Jerry's home town looking for more eligible boys to fight. Jerry and Tim had to hide cleverly to avoid recognition and instant death. They were all risking their lives as a wanted notice had been dispatched declaring them tyrants.

One day Tim made the choice to venture out of the house for some fresh air. He made a grave mistake. An old man recognised him as the boy from the poster and alerted the authorities instantly. Tim never returned to the house.

The next day Jerry received a letter from Tim:

Jerry,

Thank you for your continued support and friendship but the road must end here. I was seen by a local and taken into custody, there's nothing you can do, I will be facing the firing squad before I have a chance to escape again. Look after Helga and make sure you DO NOT BE SEEN. Stay in the house, don't make the same mistake I did.

I'm sorry Jerry.

                                     Tim,

                             Your best friend.

A dangerous silence followed the end of the letter during which the birds stopped singing and the clouds covered the sun.

Jerry didn't say anything for a long time from the day he received the letter but made sure Tim had a decent funeral and visited his grave every day.

One morning,  Jerry visited Tim as usual but didn't return. His body was found later that afternoon by the same man who found Tim. He was buried alongside his friend.
