Start realizing some things. 

Realize that maybe some jokes aren't just jokes, they aren't to you, at least.

 Discover that the things you say to him are only half of a lie, and you know why? 

You're threading your mouth shut to make sure he doesn't snip the string that connects you two together away. 

Hate this truth: his I love you's don't mean the same thing yours do.

 Hate the fact that for your sake, and for his, too, you have to keep dousing your truths with the "JUST KIDDING!" filter. 

But you know it's worth it, don't you? You know it's better to keep the line there to not lose the privilege of hearing his drowsy voice when he doesn't want to end your calls. It's much better to not lose the special kind of laughter he only lets you listen to. 

It's much better to hear his safe, platonic "I love you's" rather than risk it all just to hear three words laced with the purest of honey instead. 

And that would be great. That would be fucking amazing, actually.

 But you can't. 

You shouldn't.
