LAYLA'S P.O.VThey were in Kaduna two hours later, just in time to feed the baby. Habib made apartment arrangements while I prepared a bottle for the baby. Three month and the idea that I was a mom was still unreal to me although the back ache and rumpled belly was a constant reminder.
I stared at the blank white walls of my new home, already thinking of all the possible decorations i could put up. I was excited but mostly scared; i was starting life all over, with a little baby and without my parents. I seriously doubt if I can do this on my own. Thank God, for Habib. I turned on my phone and it instantly began to blow up so i quickly turned it back off. I was not ready to see the thousands of messages I must have gotten from anyone as I'm sure news has gone round.
An hour later, Habib had already set up most of the things we bought and we were having dinner quietly. "Are you okay?" Habib asks and I nodded with a smile. I wasn't okay but he had done all he could for me. It was my mistake and I had to face the consequences.
"What do you plan on doing after I go back?" He asked again, causing my heart to give a scared thump. He was going back to work in a week and I couldn't bare to think about it.
"School. I want to start school"
"What about the baby?"
"I can get someone that'll look after her during the day, and pay them"Habib nodded quietly. "Shouldn't you maybe wait, until she's six months at least"
"My life has been on hold for more than a year Yaya. I need to do something or I'll lose my mind"
" I know but just a few more months. For her" he said stroking the sleeping baby's chubby cheek. I couldn't help the smile that tore through my face.
"What the hell am I supposed to do while I wait then?" I asked jokingly rolling my eyes.
"I'll be sending you money every month so you do what Layla Amin does best, shopping"
I laughed. He was not wrong.****
One week came too quickly and I couldn't hold back my tears. Habib was also trying his best to not cry as he kissed my head multiple times.
"I'll call you as soon as I get there and every night after that" He promised. I nodded quietly. He strapped on his back pack and turned to the baby who stared at him with wide eyes.
"Do not, stress my sister " he said with a mock frown pointing at the baby. I chuckled as the baby gave him a wide toothless smile."I love you both more than anything. Take care slay"
My heart was breaking all over again as i watched him leave the room, closing the door quietly behind him."Now it's really just me and you huh?" I said to the baby and she smiled again, making me smile. Maybe we're going to be alright after all.
That evening, I swapped out the SIM card that uncle Farouq forced me to use for a new one. He didn't want me talking to my friends, anyone really. Plus I knew it will take nothing for my parents to track me here.
A heavy knock fell on the door causing Me to jump. 'Who the hell' I murmured quietly making my way to the door. She peeked through the peephole and there was a lady standing patiently. She looked in her thirties , probably one of the neighbors.
I opened the door and greeted her politely.
"I came to welcome you and your husband to the neighborhood" the woman said and I almost snorted. Husband
"Thank you" i said instead."Can I come in?" My eyebrows slightly shot up in surprise but I moved out of the way and let the woman in. 'One friend won't hurt' I thought to myself .
After and hour, I had learnt all about the woman and everyone else in the house. She simply refused to stop talking. I just listened and nodded and laughed occasionally.
I told her I needed to buy Rya's formula and she insisted I leave her to watch the baby since she was sleeping instead of waking her. I told her not to worry but she wouldn't budge. She showed me her apartment and I saw two lovely kids playing around, and they called her mummy. "Adnan is out with his dad, they are three" I nodded quietly, praying I won't regret this. So kissed Rya's sleeping head and rushed out.
I grabbed the car keys Habib had left for me and left the house. I had grocery shopping to do.
I was at the closest mall I could find in minutes, carefully picking up the things I needed and somethings I entirely didn't need when a kid ran into me almost knocking me to the ground. That little...
He laughed and ran as a middle aged man chased him, whisper yelling "Adnan" I chuckled quietly imagining Rya running around the mall in the next 3 years. It made me smileI sat at the chairs in front of the check out counter with my can of Pringles. I love Pringles. Someone sat next to me and my senses instantly fogged as his cologne invaded my nostrils. That is definitely Paco Rabbane, Habib's cologne. I looked up instinctively, secretly hoping to see my brother even though I know he was half way to the U.S
"Hi" he said and smiled. One word, hot. He looks like he fell out of a magazine cover in a pair of jeans and a Levi's sweatshirt with the sleeves folded at the elbows. He was handsome; he had strong eyebrows and dark eyes that were almost black. Do not get me started on that jawline and those lips.
I gasped realizing I had just eyeballed a random man for up to ten seconds. I looked away quickly, carrying my pringles can and taking some out of it and into my mouth. This was painfully awkward. I kept it next to me and to my surprise, he took it! He took a few chips out of the can and shoved it into his mouth. What the hell?He is trying to get me to talk to him and I will not give him the satisfaction. He is so childish. So I took the can and kept it on my other side, out of his reach. He simply stretched around me and took it again. What is wrong with this guy?! I took the pringles can forcefully out of his had and stood up, pushing my trolley to the counter. He just stared at me in amusement when I was royally pissed. Who the hell did he think he was?
His cologne wafted into my nose again and I knew he was behind me. I gripped the pringles can deathly in case he wants to be childish and snatch it again. I paid for my stuff and hurried out of the mall.
Back home, After I had collected Rya, in one piece thank God, I was stacking the things I bought and in one of the bags, there was an unopened can or pringles. My eyebrows creased slightly. 'How come?' I'm sure I bought only one.
My hand flew to my mouth when I realized; I never opened my own can of pringles. It was his all along!A/N
