Six weeks later...

Brooklyn

Forty-two days and still no word from Basil. After the first month, I had to stop myself from calling and texting him. I had even stopped the drive-bys that I would do past his apartment. Only once had I actually saw him. I used Anika's car every time I drove over there. I parked across the street from his building and just sat. I had called him from a text free number, and he had actually answered. Too bad I didn't have the pride to say anything. I just watched him through the window as he stood outside of his building, looking around with the phone pressed to his ear. After about six minutes of silence, he had hung up. I knew deep down that he had to know that it was me. Like who in their right mind would stay on the phone with dead silence for six whole minutes? I sat still until he disappeared behind the doors of his apartment building.

That was four weeks ago, and every day I wished that the force of anything would have pulled me from the car to confront him. What hurt me more than him putting me out was the silent radio. The ignoring me and his blatant disinterest in not talking to me is what tore me up. He still followed me on all social media accounts, so that kind of gave me hope. I mean, he wasn't liking shit, but he could have blocked me, but he didn't.

"So, another girl's night in?" Anika asked, breaking me from my thoughts.

When I looked at her, I had realized just how much weight she had lost. Her eyes looked a little bit sunken, but being ignorant of her illness, I just assumed that the weight loss was some kind of side effect. Since I had been back on campus, we spent every night inside.

On this specific night, I wanted to do something different. I wanted to breathe and be free. I felt like I needed to release. Staying inside was starting to feel like it was suffocating me.

"Mmm, mmm, let's go to that frat party tonight."

I jumped out of bed and then went to the bathroom to run my bathwater.

"The same frat that Monroe is in?" she yelled out while I was checking the temperature of the water.

"Uhh... yea. You don't wanna party with your big brother?" I asked jokingly.

I knew that she could care less about if we went to a party with Monroe or not. Shit, she would party with anybody.

"You know I don't care," she said, sounding tired.

I stuck my head outside of the bathroom.

"You okay?" I asked as I watched her slowly raise her body from the bed.

She looked exhausted, but then again, she had been drowning herself in textbooks lately. It was the end of the semester, and her classes were starting to request more from her.

"Yea, I'm good. I just kind of wanted to stay in and study for finals, but you've been cooped up, so let's go."

I smiled and then went to shower. When I got out, Anika went to her bathroom to wash while I dug through my drawers for some clothes. Since the weather outside was really nice, I went for a pair of leggings with a crop top, all from Fashion Nova, of course. On my feet, I wore a pair of flower print Gucci slides.

I did my makeup quickly while Anika had gotten dressed. She didn't even want to put on makeup, and that was weird, but I knew that she sweated badly in parties, so that had to have been the reason. I took a couple of pictures in my full body mirror and then posted them to the gram. After that, I was ready to go. We decided to take my car because Anika didn't feel like driving. As I rode on the highway, I recorded myself singing songs and posted them to Snapchat.
