Fortune

"Deep away, far away at the edge of Endia River Mountain, lived a powerful and dangerous Nightwing family. They would kill you on sight! You're lucky if you got the chance to even look at them. It's full of hybrids, animus dragons, evil drago-"

"Fortuneee," Fortune's sister, Visionseeker, protested. "Stop with your creepy and unsettling stories."

"Hey, don't blame me," Fortune said, staring at the growing fire his mother made with her fire-breath. "Blame the stories. Mother told me all about the scrolls that are sold everywhere in the Kingdom of Sand. They say we are a murderous, animus, hybrid--"

"That is enough," Silvermoon scolded. "You're scaring Moonfrost."

His sister Moonfrost was tucked comfortably beside her mother's scales, eyeing Fortune with anxious eyes. The white and silver scales that rippled against her back were glimmering against the moon-light in a perfect and dazzling way.

"Why is she worried?" Fortune argued. "She's the only dragon who is half-praised in the scrolls. You know, the most beautiful dragonet in Pyrrhia. With glittering Icewing spikes and black scales like her mother. The 'diamond-shaped head of her father, the beautiful sapphire eyes that went perfectly with her blended sapphire scales.' You know, that one." Fortune heard Visionseeker's giggle, which she was obviously not getting away with without a scold from Father.

"That is not the only side of the scrolls," Moonfrost said suddenly, shifting beside her mother. Her expression was hurt, but Fortune didn't feel any pity. "I am also the only animus, the only noticeable hybrid, and along with that I just had to have seer powers. The world sees me as a threat. They think of me as a weapon that Lunawatcher will one day use against the tribes."

Although Fortune wanted to argue with his sister, she was right. Visionseeker was a mind-reader, but that was barely useful in battle. And Fortune didn't have any special powers. The only Icewing thing he got from his Father was frost-breath. He even felt jealous of Visionseeker. But mostly Moonfrost.

He gazed over to his sister once more. She never used her powers to enchant anything. She had visions several times, though, which is the only reason she decided to stay in Endia River Mountain. She knew what would happen to her if she ever left.

Fortune wanted terribly to leave. It was all he ever wanted, all he ever dreamed of. One day he would bribe his sisters into it. One day he would get over the pain he would live with from disappointing his parents.

"Oookay," Snowstorm said awkwardly. "That's enough staring and sighing. It's time for bed. Remember, Visionseeker, if anyone comes towards you, use the black paint to hide your silver-teardrop scales. Fortune, help protect and defend Moonfrost. Say that she is a normal hybrid, no animus powers and no seer powers. Got it?"

"Ugh, dad, we know. It's not like anyone is coming after us, anyways. They are too scared of Moonfrost to ever dare to," Visionseeker pointed out. She winced at the sharp glare her father gave her.

"Holly and Alpine are coming with their dragonets tomorrow," Silvermoon pointed out, shaking off the dirt from her scales. "So are Taipan and Scorpia. You might think it's them, when it's actually not. So pay extra attention tonight, alright?"

"Fine," Fortune said. He didn't feel like arguing tonight with his parents. Instead, he grumpily went off to his sleeping cave, Moonfrost anxiously following along. His younger sister was supposed to be heroic and amazing. He wondered why he had to take care of her. He was five and she was four. They were supposed to be studying.

Maybe we can make a plan to escape with Scorpia and Taipan or Holly and Alpine, Fortune thought silently to himself. Or maybe once Shadowseer and Cordelia pay a visit we could see about them.

It sounded crazy, but Fortune was desperate. As he lay down in the grassy cliff next to Moonfrost, he wondered if she was, too.
