“Mommy can we have a birthday party for Jason tomorrow? He will be one month old.”
My oldest son, DJ, is a delight but with four children that will require four parties per month times twelve months a year. Even if I was a stay at home mommy, I could not manage forty-eight parties a year.
“Tell you what. We will have cupcakes after dinner to celebrate Jason’s one month milestone. He has to wait until he is one year old for a big party.”
“I had a party when I was one year old?
“Yes you did. We will look at your party pictures tonight after dinner.” DJ is excited and starts to the stairs. I know he is headed to tell his daddy the news. “DJ your bus will be here soon. Get your book bag and I will walk with you this morning to the bus stop.
In five minutes we are headed out the door and to the bus stop. I return and go into the kitchen and prepare a cup of coffee for David and herbal tea for me. I warm two muffins, put everything on a wicker tray and head to our bedroom. I want to take care of David the way he has taken care of me for the past month.
I gave birth to Jason here in our big bed a month ago. David had a vasectomy yesterday. We are the parents of four children. I have given e birth to three and David had a daughter when we married. While David would have had four more kids, he finally agreed we had enough and he would be responsible for birth control.
I find David woke and watching CNN. His smile is instant when I enter the room.
“Are you happy to see me or your first cup of coffee?”
“Morning baby. I am always happy to see you but I appreciate the coffee.
I handed him the tray and checked on Jason before crawling into the bed close to David. We are both sitting up against the headboard; I kissed his coffee warm mouth then break a section of my muffin.
“How are you feeling this morning honey?”
“Still sore but I should be good to go by the time you get your six week check-up.”
“Oh, we are going to make six weeks this time? Why? Because your weeny is sore?”
“Very sore”
“Seriously? Now you know how I feel after one of your all-nighters.”
He laughs and kisses the side of my face. I lay my head against his head. Jason starts to coo so I know he is awake. He is so like Carrie - seldom cries and wakes up happy. He is too young to sing but music fascinates him. Right now looking up into my face he lifts his hands. “Hi baby.” He laughs as I check his diaper. I pick him up and hold him close against me. Holding him up, I tell him, “You are my last baby and I love you so much.” He reaches down and tries to touch my face.
