Johnny was nothing if not persistent. When he had his eyes set on something, he rarely stopped until he got it. And when he saw Dove, sweet but snarky Dove, he knew that she was the kind of woman he would love forever. It was a shame that she was already taken. But that didn't stop him. Even if she was dating the super soldiers, he could still flirt with her, get her to open up. Who knows, maybe if he was good enough, he could join the relationship. He didn't mind sharing. He just wanted part of Dove for himself.
The others, though, knew this was a dangerous mission. Hell, even the other members of the Fantastic Four knew that Johnny was in over his head. Sue said as much when she ran into him after he finally shook Steve and Bucky off his trail. Something about leaving things be, that he was meddling in something he ought not to meddle in or whatever. But she didn't get it. Dove was...Well, Dove.
Unbeknownst to the rest of the team, Johnny had had heart eyes for Dove for years. Ever since she first made headlines as a hero. Some villain had been wreaking havoc on New York and both the Avengers and the Fantastic Four had been out of town, leaving the city defenseless. But Dove stepped up to the plate, fighting the villain off until she froze him and let the authorities deal with him. Johnny had been on his way back to the city with the others when he saw the news, and he swore he'd never felt more enamoured with anyone in his life. Had it not been for the Avengers snatching her up so quickly, Johnny would've convinced the others to make the Fantastic Four the Fantastic Five.
But now he was here, and he had a chance. And he didn't want to ruin that.
It was the first morning Johnny would be spending at the compound. During the tour, Steve had mentioned that the team tries to have breakfast together every morning. 7 o'clock sharp. Johnny had heard about that before. Dove had been interviewed by some magazine that covers superhero dealings, where they asked her about her favorite thing in being with the Avengers. She'd mentioned the breakfast. Wanda and Vision liked to hone their cooking skills, often making elaborate meals. Johnny liked to daydream about what it would be like to have breakfast with Dove.
And now he finally had the chance.
Not much of the team was at the breakfast when Johnny went down. Just Wanda, Vision, and Natasha. Johnny tried to not let the disappoint weigh to heavily on him. Instead, he slid into a chair, grabbed a plate, and started to pile on food on the plate.
"Are you liking it here?" Wanda asked as Johnny began to eat.
"Mhm," he hummed, going to take a sip of his orange juice. "Yeah, it's cool. Never thought something like this would happen."
"Yeah? Doubted your abilities that much?"
Johnny turned, watching as Dove, Steve, and Bucky entered the kitchen. Dove took a seat across the table from Johnny, her boys sitting on either side of her. Bucky had been the one to speak, a cold look in his eyes as he looked Johnny over.
"Nah. I definitely have the skill to be an Avenger. We were enjoying our own thing for a while." He looked over at Dove, smiling to himself. "But there's plenty of things to enjoy here too."
Natasha caught on before the others, raising a perfectly plucked brow. "Watch it."
"Watch what?"
"They're protective and she doesn't take shit."
By then, they had the attention of Steve, Bucky, and Dove. Steve was sending Johnny his sternest captain look, saying lowly, "If you're thinking of doing anything, I won't stop Dove from putting you in your place again."
"Piss her off enough and what happened during training will look like child's play," Bucky added.
"And if I'm pissed off enough, I won't hold them back."
"Oh, I love it when you threaten me, wifey."
"I'm not your—"
"Barnes, Rogers, you got a mission you need to be briefed for," Maria Hill said, walking into the kitchen, passing a tablet to Steve.
"It's our week off," Bucky said. "We aren't supposed to be called on for missions."
"Another underground HYDRA cell cropped up," she explained. "As our resident experts on HYDRA, you two were the best pick. You will be allowed to make up for the downtime you filed for when you get back."
"Fine." Steve rose to his feet, before leaning down to press a kiss to the top of Dove's head. "Sorry, snow, but we'll have our movie night when we get back, yeah?"
"Of course. Come back to me safely," she said.
Bucky leaned over, pressing a kiss to her lips before rising out of his seat. "We always will."
Bucky and Steve followed Maria out of the kitchen. When they were gone, Johnny looked back to Dove, who was adding a few strips of bacon to her plate.
"Looks like it's just gonna be you and me, wifey," he said.
"And by the time they get back, it'll just be me," Dove said. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to tell my boys goodbye before they leave."
As she left, Johnny looked to Natasha, a dopey grin on his face. "God, isn't she great?"
"You must seriously have a death wish."
"All I wish for is her to do whatever the hell she wants to me."
