four months later.
christmas had arrived.
the main city square was decorated with strings of lights across the walkways and a large tree in the center. the lights and stars (or what you could see of them with all the pollution) twinkled as snow gently fell to the ground, not sticking due to the unnatural warmth of the past few days. it was probably due to global warming, honestly.
kuroo had given the office a half-day, allowing them the chance to finish any last minute shopping they had. what he really meant–i guess, considering where i currently am–was that he wanted me to come with him to help finish his shopping. obviously, i said yes as this was probably just another duty of being his secretary.
we came to a stop outside of a jewelry store as he glanced through the window at the front display. i scrolled through my phone, checking off people i had already bought gifts for. taking in the massive crowds, i moved closer to kuroo so that i wouldn't get separated from him. maybe he should just put a leash on me so that he could keep me close.
continuing on our way, both of our eyes focused on a young couple in front of the tree. they garnered the interest of many passing couples as the boy got on one knee to propose his undying love for the girl. i watched, unimpressed. i'll admit it was cute, but i would have expected something less public from my future spouse.
"ah, young love," kuroo grinned, hand on his hip with it cocked to the side.
seconds later, a few high school couples walked by with their hands interlocked. kuroo glanced down at me out of the corner of his eyes, looking between their hands to mine. he smiled widely.
"are your hands cold? i can hold them and warm them up," he offered in a (poor) attempt at flirting.
"maybe later," i replied.
he moved closer and glanced at the open list on my phone. most of the names were family members with a few people from karasuno that i had kept in touch with. lev was at the bottom of the list, respectfully followed by five question marks. i still wasn't sure what to get him. i'm sure he would be happy with whatever i got him, but i wanted it to be special.
'maybe a nice formal shirt?' i wondered as i added a couple more question marks for good measure. it was a good thing that i had gotten his measurements the other night while he was sleeping.
"buy anything for your boyfriend yet?"
"i don't have a boyfriend," i said, finally looking up at him.
the expression that passed over his face revealed how shocked he was by this information. but all i could focus on was how close our bodies were. one slight bump by a passerby would've caused some sort of reaction, electrochemical or thermodynamic (i wasn't picky).
neither of us moved.
"lev and i aren't dating anymore," i clarified, "we...weren't compatible like that. we're better as roommates."
his mouth dropped open, forming an 'O.' the moment broke as a person with an annoyingly obnoxious (but oddly familiar) voice bumped into me, sending me tumbling forward. kuroo caught me in his arms as our lips had barely brushed against each other. in that moment, i knew i'd buy him chapstick for his christmas gift. if this was going to be a reoccurring thing, i'd like to hope his lips would be moisturized the next time.
"sorry about my friend," a man with dark, spiked hair interrupted.
slowly shifting my focus from kuroo, i met olive green eyes. it was iwa-chan! what were the odds that the universe would bring us together on christmas eve in tokyo?
