Meeting the new interns are always an exciting and fun time for everyone at Grey + Sloan Memorial Hospital. It is the time where everyone gets to meet the new "babies" of the hospital that will soon be trained to become the most brilliant of surgeons in the country. After all, Grey + Sloan is one of the best surgical programs in the United States of America. "The five years you spend here as surgical residents will be the best and worst of your life," Dr. Richard Webber, chief of surgery at Grey + Sloan Memorial, says as he gives the very first lecture to the new group of interns on their first day.
Dr. Webber always starts out with this speech each time he meets a new group of interns on their first day while the residents along with most of the attendings watch from above the gallery as Dr. Webber gives his speech.
"Eight of you will switch to an easier specialty, five will crack under the pressure, two of you will be asked to leave," the chief says to the interns as each of the attendings along with the residents observing up in the gallery mouth along to the well known speech. "This is your starting line. This is your arena," is heard from above the gallery as Dr. Amelia Shepherd, neurosurgeon, asks as she walks into the gallery, "What'd I miss?" "Everything except the intros," answers Dr. Meredith Grey, general surgeon as Amelia takes a stand beside her. Dr. Maggie Pierce, chief of cardiothoracic surgery, while standing on the other side of Dr. Grey, over exaggeratedly exclaims,"You missed the famous speech!" "I had a consult. Little girl with a massive brain tumor," explains Dr. Shepherd as she looks down from the gallery at all of the new interns.
There is one intern in particular that Amelia notices. "She looks nervous," says Dr. Shepherd nudging Dr. Grey in the arm and nodding down to the intern. "Who? The girl with kind of curly, wavy hair that is brownish blondish?" Asks Meredith. "Yeah," Amelia says kind of snarky,"Her feet can never find a place to stand on the floor." "Amelia, you can't say anything because that is exactly how you are when you are nervous," Maggie says giving Amelia a strange look. "I remember this one time when I was an intern, I was so nervous to stand up to an attending whose service I was on hated me. She would literally make me do all of the dirty work because she knew I was the "quiet one" who did what everybody else told her. I was on her service for one month because we had these one month rotations and I went through an entire month doing whatever she wanted me to do, but finally at the end of that month I don't know. I just could not take it anymore and finally I stood up to her. I literally thought I was going to blow up," Maggie says laughing and talking a mile a minute,"The last two days, last two, she actually got up off her lazy ass and actually taught me something. Even though I hated her guts in the beginning, she taught me how to be the best Cardio surgeon I am now." "Okay Maggie I'm trying to listen," Amelia finally says after sitting through minutes of Maggie's rambling. "Rude," Maggie says. Meredith, as soon as Maggie takes a breath, says,"She reminds me of you Amelia." "What? How?" Amelia says with the snarkiness back in her throat again,"How could a first day intern possibly remind you of me, the most brilliant neurosurgeon in the country?" "You mean next to your brother that is?" Maggie butts in. "Margaret if you don't shut up for once!" Amelia exclaims loudly however unable to to finish due to Meredith's stop to the disagreement. "No, Amelia, I meant like the way she acts and looks," is all Meredith says. And then it hit her. Ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod, Amelia thought to herself, pleasedonotbeherpleasedonotbeherpleasedonotbeher. I mean, it cannot be her right? Coincidences like that do not just happen. Unless she knows about me. She's down there right now looking up here to find me. Oh my God please no. No. No. There's no way it could be her. No way.
When the introductions start, Amelia cannot focus on any other intern except for that one girl. Fourth in line to introduce herself as an intern, Amelia impatiently waits for her introduction to see if it is true. Unable to stand still exactly like that girl down in the OR, Meredith, standing right beside Amelia asks,"Why are you so nervous Amelia?" Maggie then looks over to where she stands as Amelia stops and stands still staring straight at the OR floor waiting and waiting for the girl's introduction. Finally, it is her turn.
"My name is Allison Shepherd. I graduated from Washington University with a bachelor's in Biology. I would like to focus more on neurosurgery as that is what all of the surgeons in my family study or focus on." As soon as Allison's introduction is over with Amelia looks to Meredith and Maggie as they open their mouths at the same time to ask, "Are you related to her?" Amelia hesitates but says casually and calmly, "I don't know. She's probably some distant cousin or something. You know the Shepherd family is very big and most of them are in fact neurosurgeons." "Yeah, we heard her intro," Maggie says with a sort of laugh in her throat.
Secretly freaking out beside her friends, Amelia thinks to herself, Oh. My. God. That. Is. Her. Oh. My. God. How. Did. She. Know. Where. To. Find. Me. How. Long. Has. She. Known. Where. I. Am. Does. She. Even. Know. Who. I. Am. ?????????Studying the girl's features and movements for a long while, Amelia fails to notice when the introductions of the interns are over with and gallery starts emptying until someone beside her shakes her. "Amelia are you okay?" Asks Maggie, bringing Amelia back to reality. "Yeah," Amelia says as she notices the interns exiting the OR. Shaking off her thoughts, Amelia, along with her declared sisters, heads toward the intern-resident-attending meeting, following everyone else exiting the gallery.
