CARTER
The next few days go off smoothly, and Paxton goes on working and coming back to the compound. I was currently at my office downtown one afternoon when Paxton calls me. It's unusual for her to call me while working so I answer.
"Are you ok?" I answer as soon as I pick up the phone.
"Carter," she says at the same time. I know from the panic in her voice that she is not okay.
"What's wrong?" I ask while I get out my seat and make my way to my car.
"I don't know. A group just barged into the hospital and I wasn't out there but we had to lock down the units and I'm trapped in my office. I can't hear anything and I'm scared. I don't know what to do." The fear in her voice gets me enraged. I didn't know what was happening but whoever was the reason for her distress was going to have a lot to pay for.
"I have security detail there for you. Im sure they are headed your way. Stay on the line. Im going to call one of them. Make sure you don't open the door for anyone but me. I don't care what they say. I'm coming." Without disconnecting her line, I ring the guards I have stationed with her.
"Sir we're headed in immediately. We're about 30 seconds from her office door. It's one of the groups from the South."
My men knew I wasn't fucking around with Paxton which is why I didn't lose my shit.
"How many are there? And why the hell did no one intercept?" I thundered.
"This was dressed as a mass casualty. Came in different entrances and gathered at the ED, it was a mad hunt for her then. Thankfully they don't seem to have her name or a very good idea of where she'd be located. Arrived sir. Door secured."
I was still 10 minutes out and that's with me breaking every traffic rule.
"Stand by and don't let anyone in. Give her three knocks to let her know you're with me. Whatever happens she is protected at all cost," I declared. With that I switched the line to Paxton.
"My men are outside your door," I informed her and then heard 3 knocks on the door.
"Am I just supposed to stay here? What do I do?" She asks with a little hint of panic.
"Baby, stay calm. I'm about to get there in just a few minutes. I won't let anything happen to you and you know that. Make sure you have everything you need packed and ready to go when I get there."
"Okay. What's this about? This has never happened before," she states.
"As much as I want to explain to you, we just have to do it some other time after I get you. Just trust me for now." I stay on the line with her and distract her for a bit making sure I'm aware of my surroundings. I get a ping on the other line and see it's my men outside of Paxton's door.
"Sir, we need to move her out. Intel has it that they might be headed this way," my man says quickly and I hear a gun being loaded in the background.
"Get her in a car and then drive to me. I'm 3 minutes out. If I get there when you head out I'll get her myself." With that I have to switch over to Paxton's line and inform her.
"Love, there's a change in plans. You have to love out. Bring what you need and follow the men's lead. I'll be there in 3 minutes. Nothing is going to happen to you," I reassure her and accelerate even more.
"Okay but are you sure I should head out?" She asks with trepidation.
"Yes, now go." I order. She stays on the line yet again and I hear the door open and one of my men ushering her out. I hear a shot ring out but Paxton stays quiet aside from a hitch in breathing.
"Come on let's go, exit is there" I hear someone utter.
By the time I've arrived at the hospital lot and I look at my display to see where Paxton's tracker is. By some miracle, they've chosen an exit closest to me and I spot them heading out in the distance. In a matter of seconds I'm there and opening my passenger door.
"Get in," I order Paxton and she jumps in. As soon as she closes the door, my men head back in the hospital and I know they'll be gathering information and taking men captive.
"What the hell was that! Why were there men in there and why did one of yours shoot them?" Paxton asks as the reality of what happened hits her.
"They're after me so they're after you. I'm a powerful man Paxton. People want to have leverage over me," I state.
"I don't want to be part of this. I never had issues with this before I met you. I don't want to be shot at or hunted," she exclaims.
"Well that's too damn bad because I'm not letting you go. You can either work with me to ensure your safety or fight me. Either way I'm keeping you and that's it."
"I'm not an item! You can't just decide to keep me! I decide for myself and I decide that I don't want any part in this." She's nearly hysterical at this point but I refuse to give it. It'll be over my dead body when I let her go.
"Why can't you just find someone else. I'm sure you're not lacking for women Carter," she pushes.
"I'm not. But they aren't you. Simple. Now stop pissing me off. I get that you're fucking scared but running away from this isn't going to solve this. The only way you're getting through this is with me on your side. Who's going to protect you if I'm not there Paxton?" I ask her tensely.
"I can fend for myself. I wouldn't be in this if it wasn't for you," she replies. She does have a point there but I refuse to dwell on that.
"Well I'll be here to help you through it as well." With that we make the silent drive to my compound. When we arrive, she gets out the car and stomps off not waiting for me. I let her simply because I know she's safe in here. She may not know it but she knows it too which is why she freely prances around here. Paxton doesn't want to admit it but she needs me just as I need her. Just not as much as I needed her though, which I could resolve. My desire for her rivaled obsession and there was no way I was giving my prize up.
