AN: Okayyyyy so I'm currently in love with writing this story. I haven't forgotten about Owned so fear not; I'm just lacking drive for that story right now :(
PAXTON
When I wake up the next morning, I begin getting ready for work and glance at the clock. It's 5:12 AM and I'm wondering how serious Carter is about me calling him. Seeing as the past two times that I've ignored his calls, he had proceeded to show up not long after, I decided that I didn't need to go through that stress especially if I was in surgery. So, throwing caution to the wind; I pick up my cellphone and dial his number. Surprisingly, in two rings someone picks up.
"Who the hell are you and why are you calling at 5 AM?" a distinctly female voice asked. I take the phone off my ear and check if I've dialed the correct number.
"Is this Carter's phone?" I ask in return.
"And who are you?" she bites back.
"It's Paxton. Do with the information as you will. Tell Carter I called if this is his phone. He ordered this. I have no desire to call whatsoever for this exact reason. Now, have a wonderful day and tell him not to bother me with my surgeries today." I don't wait for her response and just hang up the phone. For the rest of my morning, I made quick work of packing my things and changing into my scrubs and driving to work. On my drive, I fume over the whole situation. Although Carter and I had no commitments to each other; I was still pretty upset that he'd come into my life and my home and did what he did last night when he was clearly doing other things too. The longer I thought about it, the more upset I became. I was angry at him for cheating on his girlfriend and getting me into this whole mess. When I get to the hospital; I've made up my mind. With that said, I block him and start my day ahead.
Seven surgeries and even more consultations later, I'm finally done for the day. I'm beat as I finally clock out and gather my things to head to my car. Thankfully, the guard had offered to pull my car around so all I had to do was get in and leave. On my drive back to the house, I was so exhausted that I didn't even think about the earlier events with Carter and he unknown woman. As soon as I get home, I get ready for bed and tumble in, falling asleep instantly.
Thankfully, the next morning I only have a day of consultations and the earliest appointment I had was at 11 AM. As I set about to start my day, I remember Carter and think of how he must be in so much trouble with his significant other for getting caught that he probably just forgot about me. I felt relieved and I thought this would be the end of it. I also made a mental note to tell Brielle what had happened. I knew she'd be disappointed that her meddling hadn't gone as well as she thought it'd go.
When I arrive at work, I prepare for my clients of the day and familiarize myself with their cases. Most of these were people I had seen already, and I'd given them other options rather than surgery to try out first before fully committing to the heavy recovery period that accompanied most of the surgeries I operated. Just as I was about to walk out to get more files, Jerry, the hospitals other resident orthopedist, stopped me.
"Hey Paxton," he greeted.
"Hey Jerry. What's up?" I ask as look up from the filing cabinet.
"Not much. Just finished a surgery. So what are you doing this weekend?" he asked. Jerry wasn't unattractive and he'd been throwing hints lately about wanting to get together to do something.
"Um, I don't really know as of yet. I just need to relax. What about you?" I asked back to be polite.
"I'm heading down to the lake with some of my friends. It's really peaceful. You should come," he suggests.
"I really shouldn't. I don't want to impose," I answer with a smile. I really had no interest in him and was getting uncomfortable very quickly.
"You wouldn't be imposing at all. I insist you join us. Do you want me to pick you up?" he asks eagerly.
At this point I'm getting annoyed because not only is he keeping me from my job, but he's also being very aggressive.
"I don't think I'll be able to make it Jerry. Thank you so much for being thoughtful and asking me, but I really can't go. Have a great weekend though!" And with that I don't wait for a response and just hightail it out of there. The rest of the day goes well and is uneventful which is all I can ask for. When I finish my last consultation, I go back to the lunchroom to collect my cooler from the fridge. With just my luck, Jerry also happens to be in there.
"Pax! Imagine seeing you twice in a row. This must mean something. So how about that weekend trip?" he asks expectantly.
"What about this weekend trip? I've been hearing about this shit way too much lately," an unexpected voice says in a bored drawl. My eyes go wide as saucers and a gasp breaks from my mouth.
AN: That's it....but wait...I'm hitting you with a double update. See ya in the next chapter!
