CARTER.
She was perfect. I knew it from the moment I saw her. The way she held herself was different and it called out to my darkest needs. I knew I was a fucked up man with no business of involving her in my life, but it was too late. There was no way I was giving up that sweetness. She might not have been perfect to everyone, but to me she was. Her gleaming blonde curls and soft hazel eyes. She was the queen to the life I'd built. I'd shield her from it, but she'd rule my world.
Breaking me out of my trance, I looked down when my phone buzzed.
"Hello," I clipped out knowing it was Adam. Adam was like a brother to me. Together, we'd turned the city upside down, deeming to do what we saw fit to it. It wasn't legal, the things we did. It wasn't even close to moral, but we'd fought to get to the top. He was my right hand man and I ruled over the country's underground trade. I wasn't a good man, and I knew that.
"Man, you're freaking Paxton out. Brielle's been on my ass about trying to return this card without her having to go to Baron." Adam was the only one who could address him so straightforwardly.
"I know. I've talked to her. Don't worry about it."
"Are you serious about this? She's a good girl," he said. It was true that he could get away with much more than the regular man could, but he knew where we stood when it really came down to it and he knew I wouldn't hesitate to snap if I thought he was crossing a line.
"This is it for me Adam." I hung up the phone and knew he'd get what I meant by that.
Shortly after, there was a knock on my door.
"Come in," I called out after I unlocked the door with my control.
"Sir, here are the files you requested."
"Thanks Jim," I said as he handed me the file of Paxton. He quickly left my office and I rested the file in front of me. Although I knew Harper was it for me, I wanted to know everything about her. Glancing at her file, I reviewed her entire life story. She had been an only child and her parents were outstanding members of the community. She'd taken their lead and was involved in charities growing up. Her school record was spotless save one detention. I'd have to ask her about that one. Paxton seemed to have a fire to her that I couldn't place. One thing was for sure. I knew she could handle my life. If she couldn't then I'd teach her to. Letting her go was not an option. I almost felt bad for dragging her into this life. Almost. I knew we'd light each other on fire. This was just the beginning.
Paxton.
It was the day after I met Carter and I was still on edge. For some reason, it was almost as if he was going to come at me from out of nowhere. I knew that wasn't logical, but the man made me think irrational thoughts. Bri had been adamant that she'd try to get the card returned, but I assured her that it'd be fine and that Carter said he'd get it. As scheduled, I had a few consultations and a possible surgery for the day. I was in my office looking over new medical research when my extension rang.
"Hi Dr. Bryan, we have a package for you. I sent Laura with them and she should be there in a few. Just wanted to give you a heads up," Linnet said. She was our floor secretary and she was as sweet as can be. I quickly thanked her and hung up. As promised, Laura was at my door knocking. When I opened it, I expected it to be something small. What I saw was entirely not that.
"Oh my gosh. What's this?" I asked in surprise as she wheeled a huge box in on a wheelchair.
"Girlfriend, I have no idea. This hunk dropped it off. You didn't tell us you had a man" she gushed.
"I don't," I answered confusedly. With her help, we got the box on my desk.
"Are you sure? That Asian man was simply delicious looking. Linett even agreed and you know she only likes Hispanics," Laura joked. I had to laugh because it was a known fact that everyone on this floor had preferences as to what they liked, and made sure everyone knew it. Admittedly, I was a little disappointed that it wasn't Carter, but I really should have expected it.
"Thanks for bringing it over Laura. If I do see that man I'll send him to you and Linett," I joked as I winked at her. She was laughing on her way out and I turned to face the box. It was eye level with me and I was really curious as to what it was. Quickly and carefully, I opened the box and gasped when I saw what was inside. It was an extravagantly large arrangement of roses. All of them were a blood red shade and at the base of the box was a box of authentic French pastries. I knew this was straight from Paris because I had raved about it on my visit a few months back and ate from that place every day.
"This is crazy," I whisper to myself as I spin the arrangement, looking for a card. Finally, I see a tiny white card and I pluck it off the holder, opening the small envelope. Inside, in bold, masculine writing is a note.
Fit for a queen.
-King
I didn't realize my hands were shaking till the note dropped on the ground. His play on words were not lost on me and I got tingles at the thought of him sending me this. That man was a force to be reckoned with and I had no clue what I was in for. Without thinking, I quickly got my phone and hit the recent call log. Before I could talk myself out of it, the phone was to my ear and the line was ringing. In the middle of the third ring, the call was answered.
"You got it I presume?" Carter's rough, low voice drawled form the other side.
"Yes, but why?" I asked him.
"I want you to know that I'm thinking of you. And looking forward to seeing you again. Soon."
"You're kind of scary Carter. No offense, but you come off a little intense," I tell him honestly. I hear him chuckle on the other line.
"I'm not trying to be anything other than what I am. We both know you're just scared of the unknown and I get that. I'll give you time," he replied. I was left shocked and at loss for words
"Time for what?" I asked when I finally came to it.
"Time to get used to us," he answered confidently. I heard someone speaking in the background and before I could answer him, he was speaking again.
"I've got to go Paxton. Have a great day."
To say I was bewildered was an understatement. I had no idea was he was doing, but I knew it'd change my life forever.
