Lia POV:
Bryce gave me, Alex, and Mattheo a lift to school. He parked, and we went in. We go to Lysia University. As we made our way to our classrooms, I noticed Alex bumped into a girl. He helped her up.
"Hi. Sorry about that. I'm really clumsy."
The girl turned to him.
"No problem. Now, you owe me a favor."
Alex looked surprised.
"What favor?"
"I could use some help finding my way. I just joined this school. My parents wanted me to make more friends. I used to do online school."
"I can help with your schedule."
She gave him her schedule. He looked at it and turned to me.
"Deja vu."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
He turned to the girl.
"You have all the same classes as me."
I laughed. The girl turned to me. She was confused.
"Did I do something wrong?"
"No, it's just that those were my exact first words to him."
"Seriously? I'll take that as a sign. I'm guessing this clumsy guy is your boyfriend. Don't worry, I'll stay away."
"Good. We can be friends. What's your name?"
"Asha."
"Dahlia but you call me Lia."
We chatted for a couple minutes but, after realizing we were going to be late, said our goodbyes and separated ways, Alex and Asha going to their first class together.
~~Time Skip to After School~~
Alex and I were walking home. Bryce had to leave early for an appointment, Asha was picked up by her father, and Mattheo had to stay back to finish a project. We were talking about a new song when I noticed he was looking at something.
"Is there something wrong?" I asked.
"That car has been following us for 10 minutes."
"You didn't say anything?"
"I thought it was different cars until I read the license plate."
"Now what?"
"We keep going. If we stop, they might do something. Pretend like you didn't see them."
"Okay."
We were about to continue walking when someone grabbed our shoulders.
"Watch out."
Alex POV:
I didn't understand what the lady meant. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw something. It was coming right at us. I pushed Lia out of harm's way. I felt something knock me over. I fell on the concrete. I looked at myself. No missing limbs. I consider that a solid win considering I was about to become the sidewalk's new paint job.
"Alex," Lia screamed and ran to help me up.
My nose were bleeding and I had a couple scratches. I noticed a car was crashed next to me. The man driving the car came out and walked toward us.
"What the hell were you doing?"
"What the hell was I doing? Minding my own damn business before your car drove onto the sidewalk."
"You should've moved away faster."
"I shouldn't've had to move in the first place."
People were crowding around. Some were calling the ambulance. Others were taking videos. Great. Now I'm going to be the next viral video. Bleeding Boy Roasts Man Who Almost Killed Him. I wish I was the one making the video.
"I'm outta here. I don't want any trouble from the police."
Just as the man turned, Lia let go of my arm and grabbed the man. She pushed him to the ground.
"You almost killed my boyfriend. You're not going anywhere."
The crowd was cheering us on. Gee, thanks. That's exactly what we need right now. Cheering. Definitely not bandaids.
"At least I'm not dead . . . yet," I mumbled, watching Lia pin down the driver.
The paramedics came after 10 minutes and the police officers came two minutes after them. The officers arrested the man for DUI. The paramedics gave me tissues for my nose and made sure my scratches weren't infected. They let me go with a warning to not stress myself too much.
"We almost went a whole year without seeing the paramedics," Lia said, as she wiped the blood off my forehead.
We went home to find Jane, Bryce, Mindy, Micah, and Mattheo waiting for us. Their smiles dropped when they saw the blood on my shirt. Mindy and Jane hugged me. Micah and Mattheo stared at my bandaids. Bryce nearly fainted.
"What happened?" he said, breathing heavily.
"We almost got hit by a drunk man driving a car. Well, technically I did get hit. Don't worry, I only got a bloody nose. The ambulance people told me not to stress myself. Like I was going to anyway."
Lia was trying not to laugh.
"You know, just our average Monday," she said.
