Dinner was very awkward today since Magnus decided to join us. We didn't speak almost at all but I did catch him several times looking at my bruised eye. Luckily the torture only lasted 20 minutes since mother said that dinner time was shortened.
The rest of classes also passed relatively smoothly, in history we learned about some more deadly wars and in potions we learned about some more deadly mixtures. It was all going well until we heard the ringing of the doorbell.
Mother was going over certain recipes from her book, but perched her head up when she heard the noise. "Did anyone order something?" She asked, putting her reading glasses off to the side.
The three of us looked at each other, shaking our heads simultaneously. "Hm" mother wondered, as she got out of her seat and made her way to the main entrance.
"Maybe it's the cable guy" I said laughing. We don't have cable.
Drusus and I pressed our ears against the door trying to hear who mother was talking to but we couldn't understand.
"It sounds like a female voice" Drusus pointed out. Even Achilles who was sitting on the couch looked concerned now.
"ACHILLES!" Mother's voice filled the whole house. Achilles jumped out of his seat, disoriented and frightened.
He pushes us out of the way and opened the door to the hall. Drusus and I followed behind him but we stopped in our trail when we saw who was at the door.
A pretty girl with braided hair and charcoal eyes stood at the edge of the doorway with her hands behind her back, I didn't recognize her. What was even more puzzling was when she threw a slight wave and smile at Achilles when he came into view of her. He didn't dare walk closer than 10 feet of the door.
The girl definitely looked uncomfortable but from the looks of it, Achilles recognized her. "Achilles come here" Mom said to him. Her voice was like butter, but her eyes were like knives. Hesitantly, Achilles did as he was told. He tried his best not to look at the girl in her eyes.
"Who's this pretty girl?" Mother smiled, showing her teeth. It looked like they would grow fangs at any moment. Me and Drusus stayed back, observing the scene from afar.
The girl couldn't have been older than 20, her cheeks were still round but her body developed."Uh this is my frien- this is Emily." It's not every day that we see Achilles tremble, his anger is his driving characteristic; Whenever there was something to say, he'd say it. But for now, he kept quiet.
"Oh Emily" Mother exclaimed sweetly, placing a calm hand on the girl's shoulder. Emily flinched, it wasn't difficult to tell, even for an outsider, to see something was very wrong. "How do you know Achilles, Emily?" Mother asked, putting a strong emphasis on Emily. Achilles looked like he was ready to cry, he knew what was coming.
"Oh we met at one of our mutual friend's party. We hang out a lot. I just wanted to make sure everything was alright since he wasn't picking up my calls" Emily said. Her voice was so sweet and full of life, such a shame for the words that came out of her mouth.
There was nothing in those sentences that looked good for Achilles. 'Mutual friends' means that he has friends, 'party' means alcohol and sneaking out, and 'picking up calls' means he owns a phone.
Mother started to slowly nod her head, understanding the situation better now. "Emily" She said, the poor girl looked up. "You have 15 seconds to get off my property before I call the police"
It took a moment for the girl to budge, she glanced at Achilles to get some sort of closure explanation, but he couldn't look up from his feet. Terrified, she darted from the front door and ran without looking back. When she was out of view, Mother slammed the door behind us.
