It had been three days after our mother had discovered out secret.
"I'll be hanging around at the flower stand if you guys need me." Our mother smiled as she spoke and looked at Gavin, whom was walking on her right. "Will you be helping Sam with the shop?"
Gavin nodded. "Yeah, I might be late home, since the festival lasts so long.
Owen smirked. "Are you sure it isn't anything else?"
Gavin's face flushed a bright pink. "W-why you-"
Everyone laughed except Gavin.
"He's just messing with you, Gavin. You should know this." I smirked.
"It still doesn't make it any less embarrassing, Laine." Gavin said uptight.
"You know we support you, Gavin." Our mother said giving Gavin a side hug before shoving him away toward the door of the bar. "Now go help Sam."
His face lit up. "Alright, alright, I'm going!" He waved to us before going inside.
I stood back and looked in the window to see them kissing each other. I sighed and continued to walk noticing Kaitlyn had wandered off leaving me and Owen together. "Isn't it nice not having to hide as a dog anymore?" I asked as I grabbed his hand and swayed them side-to-side.
"Yeah, it is pretty sweet." He grinned as he lifted my hand and kissed the top of it before we looked up at the mayor's house.
"I wonder where they are right now." I said as I made a mental note to return the favor later.
"In a good place, I hope."
With a sudden burst of light, red and white specks lit the sky aflame. The perfect fade from red to white, and for some reason, silver and gold.
"It's beautiful." I breathed. This was the first-time fireworks had ever been used at the festival. Cecille, did you use all that money for this?
"It sure is." He was looking down at me.
I shoved him lightly, which made out hands separate. "That was so cheesy, Owen!" That's what I said, even though my face was bright pink.
"What? It's true!" He laughed as he grabbed my hand and lead be to Poppy's stand.
Of course, it was filled with delicious deserts, like cupcakes, cake, breads, and other tasty treats.
She smiled. "What will it be, you two? A cake, or a drink?"
We both looked up at each other with a smile. We were both thinking the same thing.
"Cheese cake, please." Owen said politely.
"Coming right up." She bent down to reach for a box filled with a large ten-inch cheese cake. "I'm guessing two?" She giggled. "I saw you two arguing over the slice the last time you two were over."
We both laughed.
"You saw that, huh?" Owen snickered.
She set the box down on the stand. "Two large slices it is." She cut the two slices and set them on plates. "Would you two like boxes, or no?"
"The sounds great, thanks, Pops." I smiled before she places them in two small boxes.
"Here you go." She handed them to us separately after grabbing some plastic forks and napkins. "Enjoy, Lovebirds."
I chuckled. "You're ridiculous, Poppy."
"You know you love me, El." She sashayed her hand.
I rolled my eyes in a playful manner. "Sure, I do."
We both turned to leave.
"See ya, Poppy." Owen called.
"Have a good night, you two!"
The reason we had taken our cake to-go was because we were going to the pond.
"You know," I said as I sat down on a large rock on the edge of the pond. "I wish every night was like this."
He smiled as he sat down next to me. "Yeah, I agree. Tonight's pretty nice, huh?"
I smiled as I opened my box.
We both looked up at each other as we saw our cakes and said, "Poppy." We laughed as we took a bite. She had pink frosting in the shape of a half heart on each slice.
"That woman is so sly." Owen chuckled as he took his napkin and wiped his face.
"You're not wrong." I shrugged before noticing he was about to take a bite with frosting on his cheek. "Wait, there's still some frosting on your cheek."
I grabbed his napkin from his lid to wipe it off.
"You could've just asked." He smirked after I set the napkin back down.
I smirked. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"I think you do." He said alluringly as he held up my chin and kissed me; and I mean really kissed me. He placed his hand on the back of my head, hand in my loose, below shoulder length black hair. I had it curled, which made it raise by a couple inches. I wrapped my arms around his shoulders, leaning in.
"What was that for?" I giggled after a few seconds, catching my breath.
"Nothing in particular." He shrugged before pulling away to continue to eat his cake.
I sighed before putting my head on his shoulder to stare at the fireworks that lit on the surface of the pond. "I love you; you know that?"
He smiled as he leaned his head on mine. "I know. I love you, too."
