"Mother! Mother, where are you?"
Daniela zoomed through hallways and down stairs. In her hand she held a book, which had been covered in layers and layers of dust for years until ten minutes ago. Daniela, being the romantic bookworm she was, usually only lingered between the bookshelves with romantic novels. She enjoyed some science-fiction, mystery and horror as well from time to time, but never before had she wandered off to this particular shelf.
Perhaps it was because the maids always cooked meals, or the fact that she saw eating as something trivial, but the thought of books about how to prepare meals were like a brand new invention to her. And now, Daniela had a vintage cookbook in her hand and one goal: ask mother to help her make "cupcakes".
Daniela found Mother in the opera room. In her stupor filled with excitement she did not even notice Mother was playing for a guest and without giving anyone the time to speak up, she let out her heart's desires. "Mother, mother please would you help me make this?" With an outstretched arm Daniela showed the book opened on a page with a picture of the dish she wanted to make. "It is a well-liked dish and-"
"Dani, dearest, you can't just waltz in when I am playing piano. Especially when I have guests over, Miss Beneviento came here for some soothing piano. Perhaps call one of your sisters and try to make it with them?" Mother, elegant as always, did not lose her temper, though her annoyance was painfully clear in the way she turned her head to look at Daniella, the way she raised her chin and how her normally round movements now became more stiff and controlled.
All enthusiasm left Daniela's body. Disappointing Mother was the last thing she wanted to do, and she felt horrible over it. She dared not to look at Mother and stared straight down at the floor, book clutched to her chest. "Yes Mother, I apologise for walking in like I did..." she said in a voice so soft it was almost a whisper, and walked off. Sulking, Daniela made her way back to the library. She did not want to make cupcakes with her sisters, that would definitely go wrong. She wanted to make them with Mother, but Mother seemed to never have time for her.
Back in the library, Daniela could not sit down and read. Pacing around, or rather floating around, she looked for a new book to get enchanted by. However, she was unable to find any that caught her attention, except for one book, which lay on top of a row of books covered by dust, the book she had previously held in her hands. Perhaps it was the way the illustrations looked, mouth-watering exotic foods she had never seen before.
Unconsciously, she found herself in front of that very bookcase she had found and left the cookbook in. The book was taunting her with its four delicious meals, all of which she had never seen or eaten before, in front of a bright blue and yellow background. She felt torn, hurt, disappointed, and she did not know why exactly, she just knew this book caused all these complicated feelings. Instead of doing what a normal human would do, which is walk away, Daniela grabbed the book and threw it to the opposite side of the library. With a thud the book hit the wall and fell to the ground. Multiple pages flew out of the book on its way down.
Any booklover's heart would break at such a sight, but Daniela's did not, at least she pretended so for five seconds, then she rushed to the old book, hoping she could fix the harm she had just caused. Quickly, she grabbed the loose pages depicting all kinds of things she had never seen before, like waffles and scones, orange cakes and fruit bread, chocolate fudge squares and cinnamon rolls. Unfortunately, the book had sustained more damage, when Daniela put the pages back where they belonged, she discovered the front cover was torn loose from the spine. Somewhere in the kitchen, we must have tape to fix this, she thought, and went to find the tape she desperately needed.
