Danny's POV
I always loved having my friends over when I had a free house. My parents worked late quite often and my younger sister always used that as excuse to go to a sleepover at a friend's house or something, which meant I got quite a few nights all to myself and I slowly learned to hate spending time alone. I just hated the silence and not having anyone there with me.
The best thing about my friends was that I never had to tell them that, they just always seemed to know. Whenever I mentioned I had to spend the night alone, even if they previously said they would be busy that night, they somehow made time to come over to my house. Most of the times we'd just watch movies and play games, then realize too much time had passed and it was too late for them to go back home, so they'd sleepover. They even had their own toothbrushes in my bathroom, just in case.
I loved having them over, but right now I couldn't wish for anything other than a reason to cancel. And it couldn't just be any reason, it had to be a "I-got-hit-by-a-bus-and-broke-all-my-bones-so-I-won't-make-it" level of excuse – that's how sacred these nights together were, even if just for a few hours.
My prayers were not answered, however, and Friday night eventually rolled around and I nervously waited for my best friends to arrive. I had managed to avoid them again at lunch that day, choosing to spend lunch with Dima in the library. I almost got dragged by Alex to the cafeteria, but after Blake showed up and started talking to him, I managed to slip out without Alex noticing – although, I don't think he'd notice even if I'd hit him with a brick. Alex was the first to arrive, being overexcited and talking about the movie we'd already watched a thousand times, barely stopping to take a breath.
'—Anyway, so that's the 50th reason why I love Frozen—ooh should I make some popcorn? I'm gonna make some popcorn!' He announced, standing up from the seat he had just taken to go to the kitchen.
I sighed, 'Just please pay attention to it this time, last time you let it all burn!' I shouted from my spot.
'Yeah, yeah, whatever, I really think it's your microwave's fault because—ooh are those cookies, can I have them?' He shouted back. I was about to reply when the doorbell rang. My heart jumped in my chest and I took several deep breaths before I slowly got up and went to meet my fate.
'Hi.' I said when I opened the door, my arm awkwardly in the way of him coming in. My heart caught in my throat when I looked at him, caught in his gaze.
'Hey,' He replied, a small relieved smile forming on his lips as he stepped forward, arms moving as if to hug me.
'Alex, how's the popcorn?' I shouted, stepping away from Jason before he could reach me and moving to the kitchen.
'Oh shit, I forgot about it!' Came his reply as I reached the kitchen.
I rolled my eyes, trying to feign calmness, 'Just go to the living room, let me handle it.' I told him, shooing him away from where he was raiding my cupboards. Alex stuck his tongue out at me, then left the kitchen holding the plate of cookies my sister had spent the afternoon baking, oh well, I guess she'll have to make do with store-bought ones. I turned to the microwave and realized he hadn't even turned it on yet. Goddamn it, Alex you had one job.
'So,' Jason's deep, rich voice came from the kitchen doorway, startling me, 'How are you?' Terrible.
'Fine.' I replied curtly, tensing. 'You?'
He scoffed bitterly, 'What do you think? The person I care about the most won't talk to me or even look at me, how do you think I'm doing?' I gulped.
'What do you mean? I'm still talking to you, Jay!' I heard Alex's genuinely confused voice from the living room.
I shook my head, lowering my voice, 'I don't want you to be hurt, but being around you right now is just difficult. I told you I needed space.'
