A Flicker Of Hope

I was walking in the library when I noticed that the boy with the dark curly hair and brown eyes was watching me. He had been pretending to read but I could clearly see that his book was upside down. I walked back over and cleared my throat. Gently taking the book I flipped it the right way. He seemed surprised at first, but then quickly smiled and laughed at his mistake. I started to head back over by Bree at the table to do my homework. No surprise to see the boy followed me. I had to hide a smile at how weird he was acting. I had seen plenty of guys act stupid. But I had to say this one really took the cake.  Back at our table the wolves angrily explained their side of the story on Seabrook's history. "I'm sorry I didn't know." I say at a loss for words. It was true, I hadn't known! But my answer only seemed to anger the girl more. I watched as she stormed off, throwing her glowing blue pendant at the door. The boy next to me bent down. "Our pendants can interfere with electronics." He explained before following after the other wolves. Bree and I sat in shock for a couple moments before we finished our homework. It took forever but it was so good to be done.

As we were packing up Bree tapped my shoulder excitedly. "Guess what!?" she exclaimed. "What!" I asked, super excited to hear about whatever it was that she had been wanting to tell me about."BONZO ASKED ME TO THE PRAWN DANCE!!!" She squealed. I beamed and jumped up and down. "Yay congrats Bree!" She giggled. The mention of Prawn made my stomach churn. Lately I had been being driven nuts by thoughts that always seemed to appear at the worst possible moments. Did I really want to go to the Prawn with Zed? Would I have said yes if the circumstances were different? I shook my head trying to declutter my mind. I had more important things to worry about. Like leading the cheer team. I gulped, I was beyond nervous. This could make or break my chances for becoming Cheer Captain. It had to be perfect.

As I made my way to the gym to get ready I thought about earlier. The sweet way the stalker boy had smiled when I flipped the book right side up. What was his name again? Wyatt?   Yeah that was it. There was something about him that I just couldn't place my finger on. Something that just....made me feel....different. I shook my head and put all thoughts of the werewolves out of my mind as I looked in the mirror at my reflection. Staring back at me was a white haired girl who looked put together and in some ways, perfect. Flawless makeup and hair, pretty smile and nice eyes, straight teeth and clear skin....but yet...so conflicted on the inside. Lost and desperate to find somewhere to call home. Pain danced silently in the depths of her eyes. Hidden well enough that people would never find it. I straightened my bow and stared at my reflection for a couple more minutes. Pondering everything that had been at war in my mind. I fingered my hair and felt a small throb in my heart. All I've ever wanted was to fit in. Too find a sense of genuine belonging and...understanding. My heart longed to feel like there were others who felt like I did. I wanted to be united with them.... The sound of the school bell smashed through my daydreams leaving my muddled thoughts like shards of glass from a broken window. I took another deep breath and plastered on the best smile I could and bounced out of the locker room to start practice. "Alright guys! I am so fired up to be leading today's practice!!! Together we can do anything!" I gushed. It wasn't a lie. I had been waiting all day for this and it was finally time! I looked over at Bree...a look of panic and fear was painted across her face. She motioned for me to turn around. Crowded behind me in the bleachers were the werewolves. My stomach dropped a bit. Great. Just what I needed. More distractions. I pulled together all my confidence and put on a smile. "Sorry but this space is reserved for cheerleaders only." The wolf who ate Bree's homework stood up menacingly and sneered. "Just try and get us to leave." The other wolves snickered and nodded. Wyatt jumped up and placed a hand on her shoulder. "Wynter...have some respect." He scolded. I made note of the way he so quickly defended me. I would have to thank him later. My insides churned as an idea formed. "No I-I-I don't want you to leave....I want you to stay." I said with a confident smile. "The cheer team is for everyone....Show us what you can do." I prodded, almost challenging them. This seemed to grab their attention. I could see the spark of enthusiasm light up as soon as I said this I could hear the mixed reactions from behind me. A couple gasps and even some agreement. The wolves looked at each other. Finally a wide grin crept onto Wyatt's face. I couldn't stop the smile that grew on my face. This was going to be interesting.
