Charapter eight - confessions & tears

What? Second Kira?! I stood there with confusion in my eyes.
"Just look." He said as he pointed on a big tv in the back. The message played and I was shocked.
What does that mean? And why's this one killing people out of the blue, just to prove theirs powers?

So much questions were flowing through my head that I genuinely thought I'm gonna faint. Light noticed in time and held onto me. "Look, y/n, we have no clue what or who this could be but it's gonna be alright. Just don't let it get to you, you're just helping us so you don't have to care about this mess." He smiled and went to L to investigate, I suppose.
I still couldn't understand what is going more but I tried to not care, or at least not that much.

When it was quite late and L let Light home, I went too.
I went to his house, since mine was pretty far away and still wanted to talk to him.

"So.." I began, "have you gotten to any conclusion so far?" I tapped my nails onto their kitchen table as I looked at Light. "Well, we did, the thing that we figured out was that the second Kira is really a burden to us, since we were so close to catching him" he replied as he was looking down at the table.
"What? You were close?" I asked, surprised. "Well yeah, even though L didn't completely let go of his fantasy that I am Kira, we have bigger suspects now. They don't know that we suspect them but the invitation for questioning was already sent." He said calmly and turned on the tv.
I sat next to him, now quite relaxed. I was really happy that Light is not the prime suspect anymore. It sure was lot on him since even I was unsure of his innocence.
How pathetic of me.

I was walking through the campus, sitting on a bench near a tall tree, when I saw Ryuzaki from afar. "Hello y/n." He said as he got close enough to me.
"May I sit here?" He pointed on a space next to me and I nodded.
"I wanted to talk to you about the Kira case." I looked at him and gestured him to talk.
"It may not be so easy for you but I really need you to listen." He said pretty seriously. "So what is it?" I said while impatiently playing with my rings.
"We arrested Light"
My eyes widened, and my mind stopped. In fact, it felt like a blank sheet of paper with big what scribbled on top.
"W-what?" I stuttered as I looked into the ground. "We found the evidence and he even confessed.. the suspect were just to make him think that he's innocent" replied L with a sigh and looked at me. "But... he's not Kira, that's impossible..." I kept saying over and over again.
"We found the death note, y/n" he added suddenly and my heart skipped a beat.
It all came back to my head.
All of it, the murder, the horrible day. How could I forget that?! It's such a terrible thing that Light was lying to me, all this time.
Tears started streaming down my cheeks and i could feel L getting up. "Do you want to see him?" He coldly ask like he didn't know what I was going through. I silently nodded and followed him.

When we came to the facility that Light was in, L got us through the gate. We were walking down the halls and it felt like forever.
My shoes were tapping onto the floor that was freshly washed and my eyes weren't wandering everywhere like usual but were looking straight before me, on the not so big door leading to another, slightly less cleaner room.
L said something to a microphone next to the door and it opened.

There he stood, in handcuffs looking quite desperately around the room but his expression changed as soon as he saw me.

"Y/n..." he said as he was about to walk towards me but the guard stopped him. "I-it's gonna be alright" I said softly but with my eyes watering.
He shook his head and looked in my eyes.
"He's getting the death penalty, the court came to this conclusion not so long in the process, he's mass murderer after all." Said someone from the back but my eyes were still fixated on Light's face, he was smiling now.
Not the happy smile more like a guess I'm gonna die kind of smile. My eyes were now uncontrollably producing tears that were dripping onto my sweatshirt.
I don't know if it was because Light will die or that he lied to me, the whole time.
I knew that there was nothing to do then. But I just couldn't say goodbye to him, I couldn't accept that he's gonna die in a few hours, maybe even minutes. And I definitely couldn't see him dying.
The guards took him to the room without really much anything. He turned around and yelled something that I couldn't hear since the door shut and I was left there with L and some people that worked in the facility.
"I'd advise you to go somewhere and take care of yourself, it's often hard for individuals to get over things like people's deaths, especially when they were very close, like you and Yagami. Take care" he said, pretending to care but the tone in his voice were so cold that even he was confused.
"Like you actually care.. fuck off" i said while taking my things, wiping the stream of tears that was on my cheeks and ran towards the exit. I wanted to get somewhere far away, it didn't really matter where, but somewhere far from this mess.
As I was running through the city I saw news in a shop that had screens in the windows.

"Yes, that is indeed true. Kira is dead. After a long investigation and many murders we are delighted that we can live in a safe world again. Sure, many people can say that Kira was there to quote on quote clear the world from the evil, but as we all now, murder is bad."

I heard and started to see all of the little things that were bad about it, about Light. My face turned a bit pale and the tears stopped streaming so much. I wasn't okay but.. still I guess it felt a bit better. Even though it sounds so horrible.

"Thank you for the time, this will be definitely useful" the reporter said as she shook my hand and left the cafe with a smile on her face.
I smiled and looked into my tea, at my cold tea that I unfortunately didn't have time to drink.

It felt strangely comforting getting through it again and actually telling it to someone, even after all those years.
