wc: 2400 - there's a big continuity error with how normani got from nyc to la between this part and last but i really don't care enough and i think it'll be forgiven for the fantasy this part is
After eating, Dinah finds herself waiting for Camila to show. It feels kind of stupid, in her opinion, especially because it's been five years and Camila's leaving was something she thought she got over.
When she tells her producer that's someone's coming, he offers to leave and Dinah agrees. It's probably best that she and Camila try to salvage something without eyes on them, anyway.
While she's waiting, she gravitates towards the piano in the room and decides to play something off the top of her head, and while she can't remember the name of it, it's pretty nonetheless.
She stumbles over a chord and stops for a second, recalibrating her fingers and playing the part over again, smiling softly to herself when it flows seamlessly.
A knock on the door pulls her out of her trance and she calls out, "Come in."
Camila appears and Dinah almost regrets it, but she offers a small half-smile and Camila walks into the room.
She's different. Dinah knows things have changed, it's been five years and she watched Camila practically blow up overnight, but it's all the more different seeing Camila in the flesh.
She's not the teenager she once was, and Dinah knows that while she was always a little thicker, Camila was skinny. Now, she's not, she's filled out and she looks healthy and even though she looks exhausted, she's kind of glowing.
"Hey," Camila says softly, messing with the guitar strap on her shoulder, "Um, I stopped on the way here and bought something."
"What'd you buy?" Dinah asks, turning around fully so she can face Camila.
Camila brightens a bit and puts her guitar case down, pulling off the backpack she's wearing. Dinah notes how even though Camila's changed, she still kind of hasn't because she's wearing ripped jeans and a hoodie with Taylor Swift on it and gets excited about little things like buying her friends stuff and are they friends again?
She diverts from her thoughts as Camila pulls something out of her backpack, and her eyes widen, "You got me hot Cheetos?"
Camila hands her the bag, a sheepish look on her face, "When we were in the group, you used to eat these like they had crack in them, so..."
Dinah smiles, "Thanks, Mila."
Camila smiles happily to herself and sits down on the couch, obviously now not knowing what to do, and Dinah puts the Cheeto bag down, taking a second to think again.
Apparently, a second wasn't long enough, because she blurts, "How long have you been talking to Mani?"
"Um," Camila shuffles uneasily and rests her hands in her hoodie pocket, "We got back into contact during the BBMAs right after... you guys broke up," she hesitates, "but we didn't really start talking a lot until the pandemic happened. I thought of reaching out, but I was... nervous, I guess."
Dinah picks at her nail, "You could've reached out."
Camila nods apprehensively, "I'm here now."
"You are," Dinah affirms, sitting up after another long minute of silence, "So, what do you want to do? I have this place basically to myself until like ten tomorrow morning."
Camila jumps a bit, "That's it?"
"I don't have the energy to interrogate you," Dinah responds, "Unless you want me to?"
