The flight back to New York was comfortable. My parents and Celeste had flown to France to deal with some business there. My brother went to Italy because of the news of a mole. I couldn't wait to get back in the office and go back home and hold my babies.

Babies as in dogs.

Not children.

My 2 years olds, Athena and Ares, were my doberman's that I got for my 23rd birthday. I love them more than life itself. Athena was a bit more independent and mature than Ares, who was more playful and loud. I hadn't seen them in 1 week and couldn't wait to cradle them.

As soon as I walked into work the next day, 5 people rushed to my side.

"Miss Soldano, I need you to look over these statements for the Dolore deal."

"Madam, could you please sign off these forms."

"Miss, I need to talk to you about your upcoming presentation to the board."

"Hello madam, one of the mainframes crashed because of an outage. We need your help."

"Good morning miss, I've brought you your coffee."

I sighed and stopped walking,

"Alright, Janet just email the statements, Max hand them over, I'll get them to you in an hour, Emmery come to my office at 1pm, we can talk about the presentation then, Nova, get George to take a look for now, I'll swing by at 11am and finally Elliot thank you for the coffee."

I rushed into my office and locked the door. I just wanted 5 minutes to myself.

"How was the auction?"

I turned and saw the face of my best friend, Alexia, sitting on the couch, reading through some papers.

"Same old, same old. Levitskys were still trying to marry me off to their son."

"Wow, they cannot take a hint. Did you buy anything?"

"Yeah, I spent $87 million on a Ferrari and a piano."

"Holy shit, damn now I kinda wish I went."

Alexia Vautour was a longtime friend of my family. Her parents, grandparents and great-grandparents have been part of the French Mafia for decades now. She's the one person I trust apart from my family and also the reason she is my consigliere.

Although the Vautours never led any mafia, the Vautour bloodline were known for their loyalty, courage and strength. So they were invited to numerous parties and events.
