The Changing Point

No one can understand at the moment exactly what will happen in the next few minutes. They planned everything in detail yesterday and now they are about to put their plan into action. As Max crosses the finish line to start the final lap, their plan takes off. Verstappen pulls over, brakes to 30 KM/H and waits until his teammate from 5th place pulls up next to him. Behind them the exact same thing happens, Daniel and Lando drive side by side, the two Ferraris, Alpha Tauris, Aston Martins, Alpins, Alpha Romeos, Williams, Haas and at the very back Lewis and Valtteri. All the drivers turn off their radios so as not to hear the stunned cries of their race engineers. The spectator stands gradually become quieter and quieter, with the foreboding that they will probably witness history here.

As the two Redbulls take the final corner and are now on the home straight, Max goes to the right and Sergio to the left. All the cars behind follow them, clearing a path in the middle. A few meters before the finish line and the marshal waving the checked flag, the whole pack stops as if on command. Only the last two cars continue between the others. By now it's eerily quiet in the pit lane, too, and everyone is looking at the finish line. just before they cross the line, Valtteri steers even more to the left until their cars touch. Together they cross the finish line.

All 18 drivers behind them step on the gas together and shoot past the two Silver Arrows. While the others finish the lap, Lewis and Valtteri line up their two cars nose to nose and get out. The other drivers line up their cars in a circle around the two and also get out. The two Mercedes drivers each sit on the nose of their car and look at each other. The other drivers sit on the halo of their car. As if on cue, they all take off their helmets together. All the while, it is dead quiet, both in the pit lane and in the spectator stands. Suddenly, one of the riders stands up and takes a microphone out of his pocket. It is none other than Aston Martin driver Sebastian Vettel.

He stands up and looks around "We race as once. We have said and heard this sentence so many times. One might think that our sport is thus open to the world and accepts everyone as they are. But unfortunately we have been taught better. Lewis and Valtteri are without doubt the best drivers F1 has ever seen. But what use is all this to them if they are disowned by their own team just because they love each other? We as drivers cannot and must not accept this! Yes, we drive together against racism and homophopia! We have set an example today and thus want to tell the whole world that we stand behind Hamilton and Bottas! We should and must be an example for others and we will finish our races this way until Valtteri and Lewis don't have to fear for their places anymore! WE RACE AS ONCE!" Seb drops the microphone to the side, kneels with one knee on his halo and stretches his left fist in the air. The other drivers do the same without hesitation.

The spectator stands and even the pit lane erupt into great cheers as Lewis rushes forward and wraps Valtteri in his arms. The latter can no longer keep his balance and falls backwards onto the front wing of his car. But he cares very little about this, as he has a broadly grinning Lewis Hamilton lying on top of him, making him by far the happiest person on the entire planet. The Briton props himself up with both hands and looks at the Finn with a broad smile "And I'm your biggest fan, Val" With these words he closes the distance between them and engages Valtteri in a passionate kiss. The cheers are deafening. The other drivers continue to kneel like a wall around the two Silver Arrows and as they do so, colored confetti falls from both sides. This moment is one for the ages and will hopefully be the starting signal for a fundamental change in all sports.
