Ree was, once again, trekking home from school the next day after working on her article all afternoon, cursing Eric in her head for never waiting for her or coming back to pick her up. The harsh winds of March whipped past her, leaving her nose runny and bright red and her agitation high. She sniffled and continued home, finally walking in through the sliding door when she was greeted with a horrible, awful sight that would leave her with nightmares for years to come.

"Laurie," Ree sneered as a greeting as she slid the door shut behind her.

Laurie looked up from her trashy magazine and sent her younger sister a sneer of her own. "Ree."

"I didn't know the whore house let the whores out so early." Ree smirked as she set her bag down on the counter.

"I didn't know little girls could stay out so late," said Laurie with a mocking pout. "Isn't it past your bedtime?" She cooed.

"Girls, help me set the table, will you?" Kitty interrupted, breaking the sisters from their heated glares.

"Get out of the yard," Dad yelled out the window a few minutes later. Ree could hear the screeches of several different neighborhood cats before her father slammed the window shut. "So," he said, smiling at Ree's elder sister Laurie as he sat down at the dinner table. "How's your friend Janice?"

Laurie, who sat to the right of Red, sent her father a blank stare. "Pregnant."

"Oh, she was such a nice girl," said Kitty, shaking her head and frowning. "How does that happen?"

"Well," said Eric, from his seat beside Ree, "first the egg travels down the fallopian tube to the uterus where it attaches to the wall -"

"Eric, for God's sakes," scolded Red. "That's no language for a woman to hear."

"It's okay, Dad, I know what a fallopian tube is," said Laurie, rolling her eyes. "I think Mom and Ree do, too."

Ree nodded, "Yeah, since the fifth grade, Daddy." She frowned in thought for a moment, "and Mom's a nurse."

"Well, I just don't like my little boy bandying those words about," Kitty said, sending Eric a sweet smile, puckering her lower lip as if Eric were the cutest thing she'd ever seen. "Either one of my babies," she added, turning to Ree and sending her the same look before wiping an invisible spec of food off Eric's lip with a napkin.

"Thanks, Mom," said Eric, looking uncomfortable. He sent Laurie a pointed look, "Laurie." Ree sent their sister a matching look, urging her to say something about the dreaded birthday party. Before Ree had gotten home, Eric made a deal with Laurie to get them out of this birthday party in exchange for the Vista Cruiser for the night. Ree wasn't happy about not having a ride - again - but she knew she and Eric would agree to a lot just to get out of this party.

"Quit starin' at your sister and eat your carrots," Red reprimanded, staring Eric down with a hard look.

Laurie chewed her dinner slowly, staring off into space, a bored expression on her face, "Oh, yeah," she said, monotone. "Eric wanted me to tell you that he thinks him and Ree are too old for a party." She held out her hand across the table to Eric, "Keys?"

Ree rolled her eyes. They should have never trusted Laurie in a deal; she was the worst. "No way," Ree hissed, sending her a sharp glare.

"There's no party," Kitty denied, sending Laurie a sharp look of her own. "Laurie," she hushed. "Loose lips."

Ree snorted. "When does Laurie ever not have loose lips?"

"Oh, yeah, Laurie, I just remembered I can't lend you the Vista Cruiser on account of I hate you," said Eric.
