After that incident, Yuri was completely changed. He and his sister started admiring the Pro-Ukrainian movement. Yuri hated conflict and dreamt of going west in Poland or Austria or Germany where they all will be happy but every time he thought of leaving Ukraine, his father acted as a beacon of hope in his mind. Yuri’s father loved this country and he’d be satisfied only when his country is free. In the village, freedom was a dream now. They had to watch their back even during expressing their ideas.

The darkest night arrived on September 1, 1930 when a group of fifteen peasants came to their house along with four activists. Yuri’s mother approached them.

“You need to join the collectivisation drive.” One commanded.

Yuri’s mother was terrified by their approach.

“We won’t give even an inch of our land to the autocrats.” Yuri declared from the back.

“Don’t you care about your sister? Your mother is old and is no use to us but do think of what we can do to your sister.” One of the peasant said with an evil smile in his face.

“I’ll kill myself before any one of you touches me and my brother would kill you all if you dare approach  me.” Svetlana said.

“We will see about that.” Someone commented and the whole crowd started laughing.

A few of the peasants went towards Svetlana, while a few others jumped on Yuri and tied him with a rope.

They pushed his mother who came in their way. She stumbled and hit her head on a rock. She laid there unconscious and bleeding rapidly while the incident went on.

Just as an activist tried forcing him on Svetlana, she grabbed the gun of the man who was onto her. She started pointing the gun at them and started intimidating them by asserting that  she’ll pull the trigger if they came any closer. Just as she stared at her mother lying lifeless on the side of the rock, a bullet flew towards her, hitting her belly. She collapsed.

Yuri couldn’t believe what was happening. It was like a nightmare, the only difference being the fact that he couldn’t wake up from it. Everything precious to Yuri shattered in a blink of an eye. He suddenly felt a jolt of rage rising through his nerves which screamed vengeance. He felt the rope loosening around his hand. He couldn’t decide what  to do. At one side, his mother was lying motionless while Svetlana was dying of excruciating pain.

He turned towards Svetlana and rushed to her. In the bloody nightmare, Yuri felt Svetlana trying to say something. He brought his ear close to her. With tears dripping from both the siblings’ eyes, she whispered something to him.

“Long Live the Revolution!” That was the last phrase she spoke.

He saw his father in her. Maybe during his death he uttered the same exact phrase to his closest comrade. The rage flowing through his body was unstoppable and he resorted to an extreme action.

A deafening noise echoed in the village. In all these mess, everyone present there forgot about the pistol Svetlana was holding. A “twenty-five thousander” dropped dead in the crowd. It was the same man who shot Svetlana in front of Yuri. Yuri’s took his revenge. He was immediately detained and prosecuted.
