Chapter 1 - New Jersey

Maya Hart smiles as she looks around the house she found herself in. She and her best friend moved to Princeton, New Jersey, after Riley learned she got into Princeton to go and study law. But while she was studying Maya was full time working as a performer earning money. Maya thought back of all the times where it seemed like she was about to give up on a future as she realized that her future had only now began.

"Maya help," Riley said carrying in a box as she grabbed it.

"Okay, Riles. Let's do this," Maya said.

Entering her room Maya saw as Riley was slowly starting to unpack her room while she went into her own seeing all of the boxes. The moving company had just moved their things in earlier that morning but to both Maya and Riley it was too soon to leave home. Riley was excited about everything happening even if it was all still new but Maya was totally frightened to death about the possibility of starting all over again.

Maya exhaled as she picked up an old photo showing life with Farkle Minkus, their dear, genius, dorky friend, who was now also on his way to Princeton in the fall. Maya shook her head as she got a few things out of the box before she saw Riley.

"I'm heading out and no. My father doesn't need to know that I was out on my own," Riley said.

"He'll find out eventually, Riley, and I hate to lie to him," Maya said.

"You're not lying to him. You just say you don't know where I am. Which you won't so bye," Riley said as she left the apartment.

Maya shook her head looking at her best friend leaving the apartment as she grabbed her handbag heading out of the apartment herself. She heard her phone ringing as she exhaled seeing the name.

"Hi, Matthews," Maya said as she could sense the eye role from the other side.

"Where are Riley? She isn't answering her phone," Cory said.

"I don't know. I'm on my way to work. I'll ask her to call you back. I have to get going," Maya said.

"Maya..."

"She's not interested in guys. She's told you this before," Maya said.

"Okay then. Bye," Cory said ending the call as Maya exhaled at the older man's call.
