Chapter 28
I slid back into the booth next to Ben. I knew he would be able to tell something had happened, but I was pleasantly surprised when all he did was hand me the shot he was about to drink. I didn’t stop then either. Shot after shot burned its way down my throat.
Ben and I stumbled out the back of the club to the waiting cab. I knew I was drunk, drunker then I’d been in a very long time.
“So what did Dane say?” He asked me changing my smile into a puzzled look.
“Stuff, too much stuff,” I said.
“Did he tell you that he loved you? That he wanted you back?”
“No,” I said. He reached out to me and pulled me across the seat wrapping his arms around me. My body relaxed instantly against his familiar warmth.
“He’s a fool,” he whispered. His lips dangerously close to my ear. I swallowed hard and a shiver went through my body. I tried to pull away, but his lips brushed across my neck.
“Ben,” I started to explain that this was a bad idea, but the words couldn’t come.
“Evie?” he said moving to the other side of my neck. It didn’t take long for us to pull up to the house and he quickly guided me into the house. He stopped and locked the door and I stood watching him as he did. Then he was there again. His hand tangled in my hair, pulling my face to his in a kiss, stealing my breath. When we parted long enough for me to get air I saw we had somehow made it to the master bedroom. I blinked and our clothes were gone and as he leaned me back onto the bed my mind sobered. I placed my hand on his chest and he stopped to look at me.
“Ben…” my voice was raspy. “We should stop, before we do something we’ll regret.”
“I won’t regret it,” he said his voice was tense with need.
“You want me to promise tomorrow and I can’t,” I said. I was surprised to see him smile.
“Just give me tonight,” he leaned down kissing me again. “Let me worry about tomorrow.”
*************************************************************
I woke with Ben’s arms still around me and tried to extricate myself from his grip. He held me tightly tucked against his body. I knew I was in for a hell of a three days. He wasn’t going to let go of the idea of the two of us now. I started un-wrapping his arms from around myself hoping not to wake him.
“Sleep,” he mumbled. I was rewarded with a flashback of the first night we slept together. He’d said the same thing and hadn’t let me out of the bed.
“Ben…” I was interrupted by a knock on the door.
“Damn it,” he said. He released me and rolled out of the bed. I watched as he quickly pulled on a pair of boxers and a pair of jeans. “Don’t move…Please just stay right there.” I took a deep breath, I knew he had something planned but I was afraid of what it might actually be. I closed my eyes and let my mind drift. I’d gotten into more trouble then I was usually used to.
“Where the hell is she?” Dane roared from the front door.
“She doesn’t want to see you,” I heard Ben say. I jumped out of bed and gasped when a burst of pain hit me. I took a couple of deep breaths and the pain turned into a mild pounding in my temple. I wrapped the sheet around myself and made my way to the front door. Ben was trying to tell Dane to leave.
“What are you doing here?” I asked from behind Ben.
“Six months, I want to know why you were in the hospital for six months. They lied and told me you were out within twenty four hours. Not six damned months Eve,” I clutched the sheet around myself tighter as I tried not to let the hope build. He didn’t know, he still didn’t know.
