Chapter 34

I stretched out reaching for Dane, only to realize that he wasn’t there. I shot up in a panic and jumped seeing a man sitting in the chair across from the bed. I smiled.

“Dammit Dane don’t scare me like that.”

“So it’s true?” I froze recognizing the voice, but not understanding why he was in my room.

“Sean, what the hell are you doing here?” I asked turning on the light.

“I was coming to welcome you and the boys home. Imagine my surprise to hear that the man that left you pregnant and didn’t…”

“Stop right there,” I said interrupting the beginnings of a rant, that was sure to piss me off. “You kept him away from me.”

“How could that be my fault?” he asked.

“You didn’t send the letter like you promised you would,” he stopped mid-step and looked at me. “You never thought I would find out did you? I trusted you with something important. You kept my children away from their father and me away from the man I loved.”

“I never promised to send the letter to him,” he argued weakly. “I promised the letter would go where it needed to and it did. It went into the trash. Eve you are so much better then he will ever be…”

“At least he’s right about that, I don’t know many men who are good enough for you. I do know he sure as hell isn’t,” Dane said walking into the room and taking up the space left between Sean and the bed, a small bag hung from his hand and he had keys in the other. “I think you should leave and don’t come back at least not while we are in town.”

“This isn’t your house,” Sean said poking Dane in the chest. Before Dane did something he would regret I jumped out of the bed and rushed to take up the small space between them.

“No it’s not his house, but it is mine. Sean get out and don’t come back until you’re sure we’re gone,” Sean took a small step toward us and I felt Dane tense behind me. “I mean it Sean you aren’t welcome here.”

“This isn’t over Eve,” he said.

“It damned well better be over…” Dane started.

“Leave Sean,” I said interrupting Dane. Sean turned on his heel and left my room. Moments later I heard the door slam.

“You should have let me beat the hell out of him,” Dane said in a huff.

“He’s the type that would press charges just to get you away from me again,” I said leaning back against him.

“Why the hell was he in here?” he asked wrapping his arms around me.

“He was here when I woke up. I don’t know who let him in, but I’ll let them all know not to from now on.”

“I knew there was a reason I didn’t like that guy.”

“His bark is worse than his bite. Where did you disappear to?” I asked, changing the subject. “I woke up scared as hell that you’d left again.”

“You still think I would leave,” he said turning me around in his arms. I could see pain in his eyes, but I knew I couldn’t do anything about it.

“History shows that when I wake up alone after falling asleep with you I probably won’t see you for a few months.” He hauled my body against his.

“I asked you to marry me. You are the mother of my children and you still think I would leave?”

“I…”
