Layla sat on the couch with Eijaz, carefully changing his diaper.
"You almost ready to go?" Femi called.
"Almost. I'm changing him now. I should be done in a bit," Layla said. "We need to hurry before Ahkmenrah wakes up."
"Yeah, I don't want him wandering around here by himself," Femi said. "He's like a dog, needs to be supervised constantly," Femi said, making them both chuckle.
"Yeah, but can you blame him? He's in a new environment and wants to figure things out," Layla said, putting Eijaz's onesie back on, before swaddling him in the blanket.
"I guess you're right," Femi said.
"Okay we're ready," Layla said, getting up with Eijaz carefully.
"Okay," Femi said, walking to the front door. "So did they just let you take him out of the hospital?"
"She didn't even sign the birth certificate. She had me do it so that it seemed legit. So he's legally mine," Layla said, picking up the diaper bag and walking outside while carefully cradling Eijaz. "I wouldn't just go up and steal a baby."
"Okay," Femi said. "But if you did, you know I got your back right?"
"I know," Layla said, walking down the stairs carefully. "He's so quiet. Most babies I have seen are constantly screaming."
"Yeah, I noticed that too," Femi said, following her down the steps.
"Ahkmenrah is going to flip out," Layla said, walking to her car carefully.
"He'll probably think you took him too," Femi said.
"Yeah," Layla said, as they walked to her car. She carefully put Eijaz in his car seat that was safely secured in the back seat of her car, this made him start to fuss. "No, no, no, it's okay, honey. Don't cry," she said, trying to calm the fussy baby, as she buckled him into the car seat.
"Aww, what's wrong with the baby?" Femi asked, getting into the car.
"He's upset because I put him down," Layla said.
"He wants to be held by Mama," Femi said.
"Well 'Mama' needs to drive to the store," Layla said, gently putting a clean pacifier into the baby's mouth, calming him down. "Only a couple of hours old and he's already spoiled."
"Oh, you finna see spoiled. We are about to go all out on this, I'm talking shopping spree," Femi said, making them both chuckle.
"We better get going then," Layla said, closing the back door, before getting into the driver's seat, putting some paperwork in the glove compartment.
"What's that?" Femi asked.
"Legal papers for him, birth certificate, social security, and some other paperwork for him to legally be in my care. I'm supposed to go sign a contract tomorrow that my lawyer insists we sign," Layla said.
"What for?" Femi asked.
"So she can't just come here and take him," Layla said.
"That's smart, because your sister would do some shit like that," Femi said.
"Language," Layla said, starting the car.
"Right, sorry," Femi apologized.
"It's fine, you're not wrong though," Layla said, beginning to drive out of their parking lot.
~One shopping trip later~
Layla carried Eijaz back up the stairs to their apartment and unlocked the door, to see Ahkmenrah sitting on the couch, watching TV. He looked over at Layla then down at Eijaz.
