Rose was not getting into that ditch- no way in hell. She stayed at the edge, waiting to grab the duck when it was free from it's thorny prison. Surprisingly, Forsythia offered to stay with her. Rose didn't dislike Forsythia- it's just that they never really had a strong friendship. Rather awkwardly, Rose tried to start a conversation.
"So..." she started, her hands deep in the pockets of her lace-up jeans. "Um... you kissed anyone lately?"
"Why do you want to know that?" Forsythia asked without a smile- she hadn't had a cup of coffee since Whisperhollow.
"Just getting on the drama." Rose shrugged.
"Well, the answer's no." Forsythia answered. "What about you?"
Rose shook her head no. "I've actually never kissed anyone." As she said this, she stared down at the rest of the gang as they tried to free the duck- Adenium cursed as the thorns punctured his skin.
"Really?"
"Well, I mean I've kissed random people at strip clubs for work but I've never actually meant it."
Forsythia was quiet for a moment, then she spoke. "I've never kissed anyone in any way." She looked into Rose's brown eyes. "But I've been in love before."
"Crazy." Rose said back. "I don't know what love even looks like."
Forsythia stared at the girl, possibly her new found friend.
"I think we're a bit fucked up." Forsythia laughed sadly.
"Aren't we all?"
Adenium watched as Thorn expertly cut away at his namesake. Wolfsbane was standing behind him, making sure he didn't hurt the duck. Datura and Petals did their best to show Thorn which branches to cut away, but everything was such a tangled mess that the efforts were practically useless. Hemlock stood by on watch for cops, his injured arm pushed up against his chest, with Bittersweet.
"Look, just cut right there." Datura was telling Thorn.
"Which branch?!" Thorn gave him an aggravated look. "There's at least ten in that general area."
Petals leaned over Thorn's broad back and grabbed a thornless part of a branch. "Try cutting this one."
Thorn huffed, but started to saw away at the wood.
"What are we going to feed it?" Adenium asked. "I'm not even sure what ducks eat."
"Green things?" Thorn suggested.
"Probably aqautic vegetation." Datura pitched in. "Pondweed and stuff like that. I'd be willing to bet they also eat insects and small water creatures."
"Couldn't we just feed it bread?" Adenium said.
"Do you carry a loaf of bread around in your pocket?" Thorn said gruffly after finally cutting through the branch.
"Not normally, no."
"Didn't think so." He looked over to Datura and Petals. "What now?"
Petals looked at the small hole that had been created. "Adenium do you think you can get your hand in there?"
"Uh, maybe." Adenium shrugged. "But why can't you do it?"
"My arm's might not be long enough." Petals said. "Just try."
"Fine." Adenium agreed. Thorn stood up, their arms brushing together.
"Be careful." Thorn told him with a look of concern. "The thorns are sharp."
'Yes. Yes, you are.' Adenium thought. His face heated up at his thought. "I will." He kneeled down where Thorn had been sitting and peered into the hole- the duck was pressed up against the side of the ditch. Slowly, Adenium pushed his hand through the hole, only feeling the slight scratches of the thorns a couple times. He slowly reached for the duck, feeling the thorns get closer and closer to the skin of his arm. "OK, how do I pick up a duck?"
"Gently." Datura told him. "Don't grab it by it's wing or neck or feet. Try to get under it's belly and wrap your hand around it's body and wings. And watch that beak."
Regretting that he agreed to this, he laid down to reach further for the duck, the thorns scratching his arm. Finally he felt the soft down and heard it start to let out nervous quacks.
"Calm down, ducky." He told it, trying to grab it without hurting. "Stop moving, I'm just trying to help." The duck kept hopping around, making a bunch of racket.
"Don't hurt it, Adenium!" Wolfsbane scolded.
"I'm not!" Adenium huffed back, finally catching the duck, wrapping his long fingers around it's body. It continued to quack excessively, but he pulled it safely out of the thorns.
"Let me see it!" Datura said. Adenium, still laying on the ground, passed the duck to his hands. Thorn pulled him up.
"You alright?" Thorn asked brushing a hand over Adenium's scratches.
"I'm fine- thanks, Thorn." Adenium gave him a smile.
"No problem. Still, I'd run some water over that, just in case."
Adenium just smiled and walked off, not seeming Thorn's look of confusion as he tried to figure out why he was so concerned.
