"If you could both please leave I need to fix me leg." I requested in hopes of lightening the panic in my head alone. "I'll bring the engine down once I finish." I said to Benedict.
"I can take it down there for you."
"Benedict I appreciate it but I am more than capable of doing so." I quickly stated pointing my wrench at him.
"Ok," he said throwing up his hands in defeat like he had attempted to agrue against it.
Honestly the results would have been the same even if he had attempted, but it was a bit amusing nonetheless.
As he walked out I noticed Violet looked as if she still had something she wanted to say.
"Is there something else Violet?" I asked as I turned my attention to my leg.
"No, thank you for your time."
I felt her linger for a moment before finally walking away.
I let out a shaky sigh I had been holding in. It hasn't been hard to hold back my emotions, but they always seem try to force themselves out as soon as I am alone.
*flashback*
"Look at you. Do you really expect anyone to think you're of any use?"
I looked at the bandage covering the end of where my thigh once met my knee.
"If it weren't for you being useful with a wrench I wouldn't even let you work for me." My father groaned as he looked over designs I had scribbled on a peices of paper that he took away from me.
It wasn't the first time he had said that line, but the words dug deeper than ever.
Suddenly he went silent as he looked at one and seemed to be intently studying it. He turned a sketch if a leg I had been sketched to try to give myself hope of atleast walking a little again.
"Do you think this will work?" He asked as if he didn't belive in the design, but his eyes showed he was extremely interested.
"I don't know. If it does Id have find the right doctor to make it work." I mumbled.
"Start working on it." He demanded as he threw the design onto the bed I was in.
Without another word he left taking my other sketches with him. Even though he acted like it was worthless and probably thought it would be something to keep me busy while he played off my sketches as his own for funding it gave me hope that maybe it was actually possible to do.
For the next few months I continously studied anatomy and began designing and crafting the leg. After a year I actually managed to make the base and found a doctor to surgically attach it to my nub. In the end I decided the best way to go was with a silver base that was attached to the nerves in my muscles with extremely small metal links that could attach wires I would use in the mechanical leg to make it move.
The base worked perfectly, but the leg itself had various issues that prevented me from being able to use it.
It felt like I spent my entire life working on this leg, just for when I managed to make a few steps for the first time my father pass it off as his own creation. A few days later he shoved orders onto my desk when 'he' was ordered to make two arms that would attach halfway between where an elbow would be and the shoulder.
"Head to this location in Enchaine and get the measurements I need for the arms." My father ordered.
Of course he would send me out to run errands he could easily do even though I just started walking again a few days go, and it wasn't even steady walking.
*End Flashback*
I had gotten lost in my head while working on replacing the gear that I didn't even realize I had finished and was just staring at the leg on my desk like it would attach itself.
I quickly attached the leg to its base and did a quick test before grabbing the engine and carrying it downstairs.
I building was buzzing with business today and it was almost difficult to maneuvere around everyone to make it outside to Benedict's bike.
Unfortunately since it was so busy Benedict wasn't able to test that it worked properly until after CH postal closed for the night.
He almost cried as if spending a couple days away from his bike was the hardest thing he had ever done.
For the most part it worked when he started it up, minus a weird sound when he changed speeds, but that was something I couldn't fix properly since the part needed doesn't exist anymore.
