Epilogue
Everybody has a fighting heart. Tommy taught me that, and Chase reminded me. But sometimes fighting hearts get tired, and life doesn’t let you take the easy way out.
Then you have to decide.
What does a fighting heart mean to you? Is it fighting for everything you have, or fighting when you’ve got nothing left.
And then there’s love.
Does love make a fighting heart stronger? I gave away my fighting heart, and look where I am now.
I hear Tommy laugh, and I look beside me.
Tommy gave me his fighting heart, and died for me. Is it my turn?
Tommy’s hand is warm in mine, and he shakes his head, grinning. “You always think too much, don’t you Anna,” he says.
I frown at my brother. I can hear a slight pounding, and it’s growing stronger.
“It’s your turn to fight for the both of us,” he says, letting go of my hand. The pounding is louder now. I step forward, searching for the source.
Turning back, I look to Tommy, confused. “I don’t understand, I’m not running anymore.”
“That’s because you don’t have to,” he says with a knowing smile.
Then it hits me.
It’s the beat of my heart.
And I open my eyes.
