When I was about fourteen, I was very tomboyish and adventurous. I didn’t understand girly girls, and knew that I would never become girly. Me and my family went on many road trips, hikes, picnics, so on. One day, we were planning on going on a road trip across South America. Well technically, only across Brazil. Which is most of South America, right? Anyway though, we were packing and planning for two months, that is how excited we were.
When we finally got on the plane, ready for an adventure, we realized we left my mom’s cell phone at home. Very dumb mistake. My dad was talking about how he thought he wouldn’t need his phone if mom had brought hers so he didn’t bring his, so my mom got mad, and they got in a big fight, until finally my brother, Joseph spoke, “Mom, dad! Umm… wouldn’t it be great if I brought mine?” he said smiling.
Both of my parents stopped mid-argument and started staring at my brother, so furious, you almost see the steam coming out of their ears. Then my brother slipped his iPhone out of his pocket and waved it in front of their faces. They both sighed, hugged my brother, and sat back down. They had been standing in the aisle, stomping their feet and arguing, while everyone had been staring.
They sat down in the seat in front of us, because there was only two seats seat in every row if you want to sit in the window seats. So my mom and dad were sitting in the front, and my brother and I were sitting behind her. After about twenty minutes of sitting and waiting, we finally heard, “Please buckle up, stay seated, and turn off all mobile devices. We are taking off.” Me and my family started pumping our fists and cheering. But then everyone started staring at us and we zipped our lips. I was sitting furthest toward the aisle, and my brother was sitting by the window. I leaned over my brother’s lap so I could see out the window as we took off. I got a feeling of vertigo as the buildings in New York started to look like a colony of ants. I sat back in my seat and waited for something interesting to happen.
An old lady a few seats back was coughing horribly, so a flight attendant came over and offered her a bottle of water. The old lady took it gratefully, and the flight attendant came around the plane with her cart offering everybody pretzels, peanuts, sandwiches, and water bottles. I took a small bag of pretzels, a salami sandwich, and a water bottle. Then my brother asked me to hand him a bag of peanuts and a water bottle, because he didn’t want to be rude and lean over me. The flight attendant started to look annoyed, so I quickly snatched the peanuts and water bottle so she could move along. We pulled down our built-in trays and ate our food in silence. Then my mom, being her perky self, said “If you are excited, raise your hand.” I rolled my eyes, but still raised my hand. Come on, I was pretty excited.
Soon the pilot turned on the speaker and said we could turn our mobile devices back on. My brother handed my mom his phone, and we all took a selfie. I was a little worried that the nine hour flight would be boring, but it turns out, it was actually pretty fun!
