Quickstrike narrowed her eyes at the egg. There was only one, but it was enormous. It was special. She knew it had to be a twin egg.
Twin dragonets...my dragonets!
She hoped that whatever happened, they'd be safe, always. She knew the war was raging. She knew they were the chosen ones. Chosen to kill other dragons. Chosen to be her apprentices.
And I'll teach them. Three moons, let them be willing to learn.
Fear flashed through her, images of blood and death and...disaster. It wasn't a vision. It was a warning.
One would be an assassin, from her heart to her claws.
The other would follow a more unusual path.
Quickstrike stiffened as the black egg cracked and broke. She could see movement through the darkness, and nervously stepped forwards to look. Inside were two dragonets, as she had predicted. One was jet black with a blue tinted below his wings, the other was a black female, exactly like Quickstrike herself.
"They're beautiful." Greatness went over and shifted her wings warily as the dragonets moved and scrambled from the eggshell. "What will you name them?"
Uncertainty flashed before Quickstrike's vision as she stared at her best friend. Then she straightened, and began to choose.
"The male will be Deathbringer," she decided. "He will be an assassin, after all."
"So you agree to the queen's suggestion?"
Quickstrike snorted softly. The queen's suggestion! Like I have a choice in the matter at all!
But she bit back the angry words and pretended she didn't care. "Of course I agree. They will be great assassins. Like Nightmare was." Fresh grief swelled in Quickstrike's chest, but she forced it away.
"He was a good dragon," Greatness murmured.
"He didn't deserve to die," Quickstrike agreed stiffly. "It's a pity he will never meet his dragonets. But they don't need to know what happened. This is their world now. Not a world where they constantly think of some dragon that has gone before."
"Yes," Greatness said, though she sounded cautious, as if she knew she was making Quickstrike angry every time she talked about the dragonets' future. "What will you name the female dragonet?"
Hesitating, Quickstrike and Greatness watched the new dragonets for a moment. Deathbringer scrambled up and took a shy step forwards, but the female pushed him out of the way with a tiny growl, lashing her ebony tail. Her eyes flashed with dangerous fire and defiance. She was brave. She was fearless. She was an assassin already.
They watched in silence as the female lunged for Deathbringer, who grunted and wriggled away. He slunk away from the female, who quickly dropped to her belly and began to creep closer.
"She's stalking him," Greatness said in surprise.
"She's a hunter," Quickstrike answered proudly, flicking her tail at the dragonet, who snarled softly. "That's her name. Hunter. She will be an assassin, a hero, a hunter of dragons."
"She may be just what we need," Greatness muttered. "For the war."
Triumph surged through Quickstrike. "She will be. She's unstoppable. With Hunter and Deathbringer on the loose in this war, no tribe will be safe except the NightWings."
