A short brunette haired girl leaned against a guy with long black hair, looking uncomfortable as she sucked the remainder of her milkshake through her straw, a loud slurping sound filling the otherwise empty room.
From a first glance, if the two were out in public, it would seem the black haired male wouldn't want her touching him due to his blank expression and the fact he acted as if she wasn't there, but that wasn't the case. If anything, if you were to know the male, you'd soon realize that he seemed to care strongly about the girl.
A ringing from the males phone didn't stop him from staying as still as possible either, as he carefully reached in his pocket to take it out without moving her much. He looked over her as if to ask is this alright? to which the girl nodded in content.
"Hello? Watari?" The boy answered, his bland voice now contrasting against the loud slurp of the straw.
The boy sat in silence as he listened to everything the man on the other end of the line, Watari, said. He nodded at appropriate times, narrowing his eyebrows whenever he heard anything interesting, "Interesting. I'll look into it. Nice looking out as always, Watari."
He snapped his phone shut and threw it carelessly on the countertop. He looked at the girl next to him, or what he could see of her anyways. He saw the top of her messy brunette head. She looked up at him and he stared into her dark brown eyes that seemed to glow with energy, "Is something wrong, L?"
"There's been a string of deaths that I'm ruling as murders happening around Japan, and Watari called to inform me of the events," the boy, now known as L muttered.
"Ruling as murders? They're either murders or they're not murders, there isn't any in between," the girl responded instantly, rolling her eyes at the boy.
"It's a series of heart attacks. They just randomly occurred, and they're all criminals. I don't know much about it, but I'm going to stay up the night to research as much as I can.
The girl sighed, "Don't work yourself like that, Lawliet," she seemed hesitant to say his name, looking over her shoulder as she said it, although she was in an empty room, "You know it worries me when you don't sleep."
"I can't help it, Rae, you know that," L (or apparently Lawliet) sighed, "And it's not that bad, I'm fine."
L then got up, leaving the girl, Rae, to not have anyone to lean up against anymore. She uncrossed her legs from sitting and followed L into the kitchen, grinning as she watched him cut at least a half of the strawberry cake on top of the refrigerator, "Some habits never change."
L placed the remaining cake back atop the fridge and then turned to face Rae, "Of course not. You know that this 'habit' isn't changing, at least."
"It would worry me if it did, L. It really would."
L chuckled. Unknown to Rae, she was one of the few people who ever got to hear it.

"So you're going to Japan?" Rae mumbled, placing her strawberry milkshake on the countertop, she walked up to the boy and hit him hard in the middle of the chest, "And you didn't even fucking bother to tell me?"
The boy did not flinch, only looked at the brunette directly in the eyes, "If I had told you, you would have came with me."
Rae flinched, "So you don't want me with you? We work on every other case together, L! What's so special about this one?"
"You could easily have a heart attack and be killed," L responds instantly, as if it were obvious.
Rae scoffs, "So could you! Just because you're the fucking best doesn't mean you're immortal!"
"If I were to take you with me and you died, I wouldn't ever forgive myself," the boy muttered, trying to convince the girl to not be angry with him.
"You think if I just let you fly to Japan and you were to die, I'd live a life of happiness? No, because I fucking care about you too much. Because you mean everything to me. You're either getting on that plane with me, or not getting on it at all. I'm putting my foot down, L," the girl hisses, narrowing her dark eyes into slits.
L sighs, "Option three being, I get on the plane and you stay here."
Rae tries to respond with something snappy, only to open her mouth and not have anything come out. She glares at L and brings her thumb to her hair and pulling on the tangled curls until it hurt, a bad habit of hers, "Fine. You win, have fun in Japan. I won't argue with you at all."
She brings her free hand up to her eyes and wipes the tears beginning to fall, "Please be safe, L. Please."
To that, L did not respond, and walked out of the door. Leaving his broken hearted best friend alone, one of her greatest fears.
The greatest fear of them all, however, was losing the one person who meant something to her - L.

So that was chapter one. Was it good? I tried. I only had about a thirty minute time limit though, so my apologies if it isn't the best.
