“Afternoon, Mr. Schue!” I said, skipping by. He turned his head, his mouth hanging open. “Y-you’re early, Cassidy…” I turned to him as I sat down in my chair. “Uh…yeah. I am.” His mouth hung open for a little while longer, but the rush of the other kids walking into the room got him to stop.
Kurt took a seat next to me and winked. “What was that about?” I asked. He laughed and motioned his head upwards, nodding over at Sam who sat behind me. “Y’know,” he giggled and nudged my arm.
“I told you, Kurt, I’m not into him. Leave it alone.” Kurt raised an eyebrow and made a ‘humph’ noise with his sassy attitude towards me. He then turned the other way to face Rachel and started talking to her, ignoring me.
“Fine, be like that.” I said to him, flipping my hair over my shoulder.
Mr. Schue claps his hand together, and then leans against the board. “So, today we have only 2 duets left – Sam and Quinn, and Cassidy and…whoever her partner is.” Everyone shuffles and laughs a bit.
As Sam and Quinn make their way up to the front, Artie nudges me from the other side of my seat. “So, who is your partner?” he asks inquisitively, leaning in to hear me speak.
“Um…I guess you’ll see…” I respond awkwardly, biting my lip – as no one knew about Rory but Sam and I.
Artie continues to stare at me in confusion, but I look away, not wanting to engage him. I see him shrug his shoulders and face forward out of the corner of my eye, then relax.
“Sam…Quinn – you’re up!” Says Mr. Schue, moving out of their way and to one of the seats in the front row, listening attentively.
Quinn smiles at to us all, then looks over at Sam, who smiles ever so timidly back at her. Kurt glances my way, opening his mouth in shock and covering it sarcastically. I roll my eyes and him, shake my head and tune into what Quinn starts to say.
“So,” She starts. “Sam and I have picked the song ‘Sweet Louise’ by the Belle Brigade for this week’s assignment.
As they start to sing, their voices in harmony, I glanced all around the room frantically, my eyes darting from door to door. I looked up at the clock, then back to the doors. Rory was supposed to meet me earlier so we could practice once more before the club actually started, but he never showed up.
I tried to rid my head of negative thoughts, and tuned back into the performance, when at that exact moment, Sam winked at me, reassuring me he’d be there; as he noticed my worried look.
Out of my peripheral vision, I noticed Kurt nudging Rachel and pointing between Sam and I, both giggling side-by-side. I shook it off, focusing on whether Rory would show up or not.
Suddenly, as I tuned back into the performance, they were coming to an end. I started to panic just a little bit more.
They smiled and bowed to us, then walked back to their seats as Mr. Schue decided to stand up and walk towards the front.
“Alright, so next up is Cassidy. Cassidy, break a leg.” He said with a smile. I smiled nervously in return, seeing as Rory still wasn’t here.
I stood at the front and handed the sheet music to Brad and nodded to him. I looked over at Sam who kept his eyes fixed on the door, watching for Rory, but he glanced back at me and shrugged, motioning to start, as it didn’t appear as though Rory would be coming.
I nodded to Brad so he would start playing the song, and then cleared my throat, preparing for the embarrassment coming my way. The first few lines were supposed to belong to Rory so I wasn’t completely familiar with them. I glanced over at Mr. Schue, swallowing and panicking at his look.
Mr. Schue seemed surprised and confused, but continued to listen closely to see what would happen next.
As I opened my mouth to improvise words, I noticed Sam smiling excitedly, and that’s when I heard it. The same voice I’d heard that day in the boy’s locker room. I looked over my shoulder, smiling.
There was Rory, strolling into the room, making his way around the piano, and continuing to serenade the class.
His eyes meet mine, and he nods, urging me to join in.
“Words fall through me, and always fool me; and I can’t react…” I start to sing along with him, our voices in harmony now, leading up to the chorus.
The words fall out of my mouth so easily as I continue to look into his eyes, and before I know it, the song has ended.
I zone back into reality, hearing clapping from my friends. I look over at Kurt and Rachel, now including Mercedes in their little conversation about what just happened before their eyes. They all gawked at me, and then Rory, then back to me, and back to Rory continuously.
I gave an awkward wave to them, and then took my seat, patting a chair next to me, motioning for Rory to sit.
He sat down just as Mr. Schue stood up, walking over to the front, pulling out a stool, and sitting on it, looking from face to face.
Rory and I looked at each other, anxiety filling up our bodies. Then Mr. Schuester looked at us both.
“So, who’s Frank Sinatra over here?”
