a peaceful silence floats in the air as dream leans a rather worn-out skateboard against his garage wall. a few dents and torn grip tape, along with random dirt marks prove it's had good use.
it's the same skateboard he had out all summer, and even looking at it causes memories to resurface in his mind.
"dude, you suck."
a lightly freckled face scowls at his friend, "shut up, sapnap. you literally googled how to do a kickflip."
he giggles, "yeah? and it worked, watch."
the man proceeds to show off to his friends, all the while he's laughing.
"dream? did you see? i'm so good, just- so good."
the blond's attention is snapped to his friend, and he nods in return. "show twitter that, they'd go crazy for it."
the three friends laugh, before dream zones back out trying to learn a new trick. sapnap had convinced the other two to skate with him, he claimed it'd be fun- and although dream is picking the hobby up well, george is suffering.
grazes and cuts lie upon his knee, and he sits on the floor just watching his friends mess around on their own boards. george rests his legs on his board, rocking it back and forth gently while he tells stories and cracks jokes to the other two.
dream sighs, looking around his near-empty garage. his phone buzzes from inside his pocket, and he tugs it out curiously. his screen lights up as he tilts it towards him, and he reads the time and date which is on display.
it's almost 10pm, the sun disappeared about half an hour ago. as he's reminded of the month, he feels his heart ache. he glances at his skin, tanned and ever so slightly pink from the last really sunny day.
he reads the message he received, a small smile on his lips.
mom
> patches is meowing, can u let her out with u while u tidy? don't be out too late.
yeah of course, she can chill with me. i won't, < i'll be another hour maybe
> thanks. how are you holding up? if you need me i'll be in my room, wake me up.
i'm fine, mom. you don't need to worry (: love u <
> night, love u loads.
he can't help the sigh that escapes past his lips. in his mind, he can see his mother's tired face from worrying. it makes him feel guilty, it makes him feel helpless.
he pockets his phone, looking around his garage. the door wide open to reveal the yard. grass sways gently in the breeze.
a green bike lies within the blades of grass, abandoned after using it all summer. he walks over slowly, lifting it by the handlebars as he steers it towards the garage door.
the familiar feeling of the bumpy rubber handlebars bring memories under his palms. his fingers trace all the places they've been over the last months. he touches the brakes, pulling them slightly and letting go, he feels the small tear his cat had created on the seat. his skin cools as he splays long fingers over the metal.
"you are so slow. oh my god."
wind runs through his wild hair as he picks up speed, his legs cycle quicker as he catches up with his friend.
