Burning Water.
A book written by Malik...Something...
Prologue
The great, towering dark clouds covered the evening sky, observing as peculiar things happened. A beautiful sunset of dark purple, light pink and dashes of orange hid behind those gloomy rain clouds. The chilling air fell over the dark haired boy as he glanced around to look at the vast fields. The air seemed to be sweeping through them like a strange mist. He could see trees far off in the distance. A forest. A very big one with trees of various shapes and sizes. But from where the boy was standing, they all looked the same.
He was running on a narrow rocky path. The scanty rocks and the uneven earth made a soft crunch sound under his worn-out white running shoes. He sprinted, the cold air whistling by. His face was becoming paler by the minute. Behind him, an enormous amount of dust flew up in the air. Like a mighty racing horse, the lad ran past thousands and thousands of obscure strands of grain and crops. But the boy didn’t pay much attention to the fields. Was he wrapped up in all the exhilarating speed? The great rush of adrenaline? No, in fact, he looked worried. Worried that he wouldn’t make it in time. Worried that everything would fall apart, if he didn't get to his destination in time.
If you could see the boy, you would be able to tell that he wasn’t a great runner. His right leg was limping ever so lightly, and he must have had a cramp, because, there’s no other reason why he would be grabbing his side as he was. It almost seemed a bit comical. But, with the tension in the air, there was no time for laughter.
The boy looked at his feet as he ran, he could tell he was slowing down. He was simply getting tired. Well, actually exhausted. He ran much more than he thought he could. His legs were about to collapse. In the matter of seconds, he was walking, shaking. The tired boy felt cold again and his legs were starting to ache even more. Why had he gotten into this mess? Why was he out here, miserable?
If it were any other time, he would be complaining. But the young man was determined, he had something to do, something he absolutely had to accomplish very soon. So he kept on going, even if the cramp inside seemed to be cutting his lungs, and even if his heart seemed to be pounding its way out of his body. He felt his heartbeat by pressing his index finger on his neck. It beat rapidly.
Suddenly, he stopped. Just like that. He was standing, breathing heavily. The breeze brushed his sweaty hair. He took a deep breath, closed his eyes. The air was fresh and cool, but he could still, faintly taste something disgusting. He was weak, and on top of that, scared. The lad sat down on the side of the path, hugging his bent knees to keep himself warm. Just a little rest, the boy told himself. I can’t waste any time.
He looked about, his vision blurry with perspiration. His mouth fell open, not for breath, but by shock. He saw something unexpected. An orange light. Flickering. The grain in the field waved slower in the presence of the new source. He blinked to get more focus on the thing. Curious, he crept closer to the light, into the field, the plants up to his chest.
The light was coaxing him in, tempting him nearer. He looked around to see if anyone was watching, and then he stepped towards the light. He knew he shouldn’t be, but it was so…intriguing. Come...come and see... A voice called in his head. The crop in the field scrapped the boy’s bare arms and legs, but, he didn’t seem to notice. The boy was terribly frightened, telling himself to go away, far away from the crazy event. What if he arrived late? What would happen? Everything was up to him. People counted on him, trusted him. But he was failing, hypnotized by the light. As the boy approached it, his unanswered questions and his worries felt as if they were floating away. His heart was empty, his mind was empty. He wanted more. Yess...yess...come and see…
The fiery light grew as he got closer. He saw a candle, mounted on a candlestick. The boy wondered how he hadn’t seen this before, from the path. He then looked back. He stared at the rocky path and knew where it led to. He needed to be there. He was already late. He wanted to cry, or someone to slap him, bring him to his senses. He bit his tongue. He turned to get just one more glimpse of the light.
Gasping, he realized it wasn’t a flame; it was water. Burning water! He took a step forward, extending his hand and arm to get the slightest touch. Three inches, two inches, a half an inch... His fingers felt the ridged candlestick for three seconds. One, two, three, and then it disappeared. The whole body engulfed in fiery flames and vapored its way into the sky, joining the other clouds of black.
Yess…Come and ssee... Come and ssee your future!
