Chapter 2
“I tell you this, never, ever give up,” the wise man grunted in pain, then continued “ Because if you do, Envor… Envor will fall!”
Lord Glonovin kneeled down beside the dying man.
“I won’t father, I won’t.”
Lord Golovin put one frail hand to his heart and the other to his father's. One of the heartbeats faded and sunk. Lord Golovin cried.
The warming sun shined through the windows of the orphanage as Jason turned the last page of his book.
Father? Lord Glonovin was his son? Wait, that means that the whole thing about Envor and Mighty Quest was about Lord Glonovin! Why do books end this way? He thought. Now I have to wait until the sequel comes out…
The teenager quickly scanned the author’s short biography without interest, and then he saw the release date for the next book in the series.
Next year… Jason read in his mind.
He closed the book and placed it on his bedside table. Accidentally, the hardcover book knocked the silver alarm clock onto the off-white carpet. Sighing, Jason sat up in his bed and straightened his dark blue tee shirt. The unreadable orange word ‘courage’ was fading on his old shirt. That reminded him he had to go buy some more shirts. But ignoring that fact, he knelt down and grabbed his alarm clock. He turned it around to see the time displayed on it. 1:57 pm it read.
I should go, He thought.
2:00 pm was the end of free time and the beginning of his Science class. He walked across the room towards the door. The two other unoccupied beds in the room were neatly, or nearly, made. When he looked back at his own, he told himself to rapidly tidy it up.
After his bed was made and he put his white and gray indoor shoes on, he went out into the hallway and headed towards is locker. Jason was lucky, his locker was fairly close to his room, which made things much easier. There were only a few other orphans walking down the hallways, not like usual. Everyone must have already been in class.
Oh, no. I’m not going to make it. Jason thought as he picked up his pace.
I must not have heard the bell.He realised. He reached his locker and speedily spun the padlock’s combination. He took out his history book and notebook and hurried to class. Once realizing he had forgotten his pencil case, he turned around. As he spun the padlock’s numbers again, he gazed onto his watch. 2:02 pm it read.
The lukewarm air of the building pushed on his face as he sped up. His blue eyes dried. And blinking them worked. Another student wearing a green top was in the white-tilled hallway. But no others.
Great, I’m really late. Jason thought. They’re already all in class.
Jason turned left at the fork in the hallway. Posters and pictures that he had seen way too many times were placed onto the walls. Most of them were about the rules. Jason slowed down to a fast walk when he saw the one saying ‘don’t run inside the building’. Under the bold words there was a picture of two stick-men running into each other.
Jason turned his head back in front of him. Just as he did so, something collided into him. He stopped short and shifted his footing so that he wouldn’t fall.
“Mr. Jason Branchcomb,” a voice said. Jason looked up as he clutched his nose. It was Mr. Harrison, his math teacher. Jason gazed at the tall figure. The man had an average blond buzz-cut, a wide nose topped with a pair of dark glasses and deep brown eyes. His blue tie was nicely tucked in his black suit.
