Chapter 5
Rain fell from the stormy, grey skies for one week straight. The ‘short-hike’ had been canceled not because of the rain but because of the old, crazy man who lived in the forest, the guy who was shooting the gun. All the orphans were banned from the forest until things had settled, and until anyone wanted too. Who would want to take a stroll in the forest in such weather? Some farmer close by heard the gun shots and called the police, which they then took the matter in their own hands, setting up the yellow 'Warning' and 'Caution' ribbons around the outside of the forest, setting a frightenned attitude. And a few days after the incident, the police also saw to it that the man had been found, and aparently they found a big mansion in the forest, and they took the man to jail for possessing and firing a gun without legal permit.
But now that all of that matter was over, life in the orphanage grew normal again.
Lily was sitting with Makayla in the eating hall, as it was called. The hall had a high ceiling and blue and white tiles. About ten round tables were spread out in the room. Two rectangular tables stood at the two walls, another wall had been taken out; the entrance, and finally the fourth wall, was the entrance to the kitchen. About five small windows let the sunshine in, when there was any.
Makayla was more of a thin and fragile child. She had a weak metabolism, which she had got from her mother, who had died after many years in the hospital. Her father was an alcoholic and wasn't in suitable form to raise live with his daughter. She, just like Lily, was usually happy. Makayla would always stay close to Lily, even though she was almost two years older. She was the first girl that Makayla had met at the orphanage and they used to chare the same room, but things changed when other orphans came and went. She was now chewing on a mouthful of carrot salad, which she had gotten from the cafeteria. Lily had chosen the cheese-covered pasta, which she usually took when there was any. She pushed her hair behind her ear, avoiding the mess of getting hair into her pasta.
“Lily, let’s guess what Morgan will take, ‘k?” Makayla said, after swallowing.
Lily nodded as she chewed. She looked over at where Morgan was standing, a green platter in her hands. She slid it across the four metallic bars. Over the conversations of the other orphans, they heard the old cafeteria lady who had a heart of gold.
“Hello Morgan, what can I get you today?” She asked, shaking. “Choose well.” The lady winked at her.
Lily felt a nudge. “I bet she’ll choose the mushroom soup.” Makayla said, pointing at Morgan with her plastic fork.
“We both know she’s gonna’ take a chocolate brownie.” Lily said.
Makayla nodded.
“Duh, but mushroom soup and a chocolate brownie?” Makayla responded, grimacing. Lily chuckled.
They saw Morgan point at the pasta.
“Oh, she’s going with the…” Makayla started.
Then Morgan pointed at the soup, then back at the pasta.
“What’s she doing?” Lily wondered. Makayla ate a slice of a spice covered tomato.
Morgan came back with her platter; a plate of cheese pasta, a bowl of soup, which had slightly spilled onto the platter, and a small brownie.
Lily laughed again.
“You just couldn’t choose, huh?” Makayla said when Morgan sat down beside Lily. She smiled.
“What? I’m hungry, okay?” She said, and was looking around.
"You forgot your fork." Makayla pointed out.
