(this sucks but whatever)
“Happy birthday to you!”
Why was I here again?
“Happy birthday to you!”
Oh right, my family.
“Happy birthday dear Tessa!”
But seriously, no one likes the birthday song.
“Happy birthday to you!”
I smiled, pretending that I even slightly enjoyed that.
“Thanks, guys, you’re the best,” I said, sitting on my couch next to my sister.
Kendra, my best friend, walked over to the punch. “Trust me, I know I’m the best.”
“She really does,” Kaitlyn, my sister, said from beside me. “Maybe a little too much.”
I laughed, enjoying my small party. Just me, my sister, my best friend, and my mom if she ever got here. Ken and Kate had wanted me to have a huge party, but I convinced them to let me plan it. Small was great.
“Wouldn’t it be a shame if this punch got spiked?” Ken asked, more muttering to herself than anyone else.
“Kendra, don’t you dare!” I laughed.
Kate smiled. “I dare you, Ken!”
Ken pulled out a bottle of vodka, one I didn’t know I had.
“Oops,” Ken smirked as she dumped the entire bottle into the bowl. “My hand slipped!”
“Gosh Kendra,” I laughed. “You’re so much work.”
Kate walked over to the punch. “I can’t wait to see what you guys have planned for my 21rst birthday.”
“Tessa!” Mom said, running into the room. “Did I miss the singing?”
I got up and hugged her, smiling. “Yeah, you did. And we are not doing it again!”
“Well, at least I can be the one to spike the punch,” Mom sighed, pulling out a bottle of vodka from her purse. “Though, I have always liked the singing.”
“Well..” Ken said from behind me. “Maybe you can’t spike the punch.”
Mom laughed. “I should have known you would beat me to it.”
“Come on, Mom,” Kate said, flopping on the couch. “Sit down!”
“Ok, ok!” Mom laughed, sitting next to her.
I sat on the recliner, letting Ken sit on the couch.
“What was the craziest thing we’ve done?” Ken asked, looking around the room.
Kate answered first. “The skateboard thing.”
I laughed, remembering it all so clearly.
Ken and I were 12, Kate was 10. I had the genius idea to build ramps and skateboard down them. But then, we decided that was too boring.
So we got metal poles and were jousting as we skated down the ramps. Kate kept telling us to stop, telling us that it was a dumb idea. She was right.
We ended up hitting each other. I hit Ken in the arm, she hit me in the leg. Her arm ended up broken, but I was fine.
“We dyed our hair with Kool-Aid, to show our colors,” Ken laughed.
“You did purple and I did blue,” I added, smiling.
