here it is!
but quick side note first! I always imagine Dum as a sibling younger than Player, so she's going to be younger than Player in this short story! Also, Gametoons has not mentioned that Player has an older brother (at least from what i know), so this story is definitely not canon.
now here ya go :)
Player's POV
I stirred my spoon around in my cereal at breakfast absent-mindedly, knowing I should eat my breakfast before it turned soggy. But I just couldn't eat, not when it was the Big Day. The Big Day had been a topic throughout my family for a couple years now, and it was finally time for it to come into play. The Big Day was when my older brother Patrick was moving out—and into some prestigious college he got a scholarship for. When I first found out, I couldn't believe it. Patrick had been a part of my life for so long; it didn't seem right that one day he could simply disappear from my life for, like, 4 years or something. And it had been his decision too. He wanted to do this; to get this scholarship so he could move in to college. It wasn't fair. Especially since there was no way I'd be able to do the same thing when I grew up. After all, I never won anything—definitely including a scholarship to anything.
Patrick and I had always gotten along. I mean, there was the occasional argument, sure, but we never had a fight that lasted more than a week, and we always ended up apologizing in the end. But when Patrick himself told me he was leaving, I had refused to talk to him directly for an entire week and a half. Even as I sat across the table from him and my little sister Dum now, I wasn't meeting his eyes. Even though Mom and Dad had woken up early so that they could help Patrick move his stuff into his car before breakfast, so he could take it to college, I had stayed in bed until they were finished.
Now, as Patrick finished his own cereal with a slurp, he jumped up from the table and said excitedly to my mom, "Right, I'd better leave soon. I want to have my stuff moved in this morning so I can get to know the campus better, since classes start tomorrow."
I frowned, but my mom agreed, "Yes, you'd better do that. Let me grab your dad, and we can say our goodbyes." She rushed off to find my dad, and there was an awkward silence in the kitchen as Patrick, Dum, I were the only ones left in there.
"Are you going to say goodbye to me?" Patrick said finally, turning towards me. I stayed silent, and instead shoved a spoonful of cereal in my mouth to avoid the question. "You can't avoid me forever." Patrick said, flashing a teasing smile. "Why not?" I finally grunted. Patrick's face fell and Dum made a small gurgling noise that sounded a bit like laughter. "I thought you'd be happy for me, Player. I got into the college I wanted, you know that's really hard for me to do." "Uh-huh." I grumbled. "I know." "Are you sad that I'm leaving?" Patrick asked softly. My throat feeling tight, I responded stiffly, "Maybe."
"Player," Patrick moved over to give me a hug, his purple arms circling around me. "I'll be here for some weekends. It's not like I'm going away forever." "But it feels like you are!" I cried. "Listen—it isn't fair! No one asked what I thought of the situation! And on top of that, what if Mom and Dad expect me to get into some fancy college too?! I'm not good enough!" Patrick sighed and gave me a light smile. "Player, of course you're good enough." "But there's no way I'm getting a scholarship to anywhere like you did; I'm not good at school like you are! Plus, I never win anything!" I pointed out.
"Well, maybe you're right." Patrick shrugged. "Or maybe you're wrong. Player, here's a tip Dad told me—you've got to work hard for your wins. You can't just take the easy route and expect to gain anything—not that you're taking the easy route," He hurriedly added after seeing the look on my face. "It just takes time to win things, Player. But when you do, it'll feel worth it because you worked for it."
I swallowed, taking in his advice and thinking it over. If I worked really hard at something, would I succeed? As if sensing my thoughts, Dum said abruptly but sweetly, "I believe in you, Player." I gave her a gentle smile. "Thanks, Dum." Maybe Patrick's advice was right after all. Or at least, I would try it and see what happens.
"Well, no matter what, you'll always be a winner in mybook, Player." Patrick said affectionately, tousling my hair. I gave him aradiant grin. "Thanks, Patrick. You're a winner too. And I'm proud of you."
hope you enjoyed, and have an amazing morning/afternoon/night everyone!
