The summit was a very short distance above by now. It had taken them half the night, a long rest, and the early hours of morning but they were nearly there.
At the top was a jagged stone arch. The snow surrounded the arch in a perfect circle as if getting to close would cause it to melt and evaporate.
"I can't believe we're going home. It's been a month. I can see why other wolves come all the way out here to Earth." Spoke Rosewolf. "It's magnificent."
"Well, are we going? If we wait around, we might get swept away by the next storm. It's a long way down. I'd rather not be thrown dow there by violent winds." Interjected Platinumcoat.
"You have a good point. Rosewolf, activate the portal." Ordered Goldmoon (although it was more of a request than an order).
Rosewolf whispered an unintelligible incantation. At once, the portal lit. A bright, blue vortex appeared between the arch of stone. A strange yet familiar feeling hit the wolves immediately. The feeling of magic.
"Give me a minute. I have to connect it to the destination." Rosewolf spoke.
Not long after, the portal became brighter. At its center, there was another place. It was like looking through a window and seeing a completely different planet... Which is what was happening.
"Let's go home, shall we?" Suggested Goldmoon.
They all stepped through the portal, entering into a much brighter world. The light of the star (which wolves coincidentally named the sun) shone through the many holes in the roof. The grey, cold, stone bricks were cracked and mossy. Vines grew from the crevasses in the walls. The floor was uneven with tufts of fresh, green grass poking through.
The wolves wandered into the next room of the ruins. It was of equal condition with the exception of one flower held in the middle of the room. The petals of it were black and magenta. They wrapped around one another, forming layer after layer of delicate petals. Holding up the flower was the thorny, green stem of a rose. The roots had dug deep into the soil beneath the bricks, holding it into position, making moving the flower to a better location difficult. Despite being laid underneath heavy slabs of stone and having to compete with the moss and foliage of the ruins, the flower was thriving, releasing pollen into the air.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Rosewolf commented. "It's said that a king and queen once ruled over voids edge. The queen died, leaving this flower in her place. The king left his world behind, never to be seen again. It's an interesting myth to say the least but of course it's just that. A myth. A story to please the masses."
Finally, the wolves found themselves at the ruin's exit. The wooden doors swung open before them, revealing a dirt path leading to a clearing. The grass in the clearing was a vibrant green. The sky a pleasant blue. At the clearings center was a large tree with a treehouse fitted into the side of it. Many huts, big and small, circled the tree. Some were made with mud bricks. Others were built using a hollowed out tree stump. It was a beautiful, functioning society.
"Ah. Home." Uttered Goldmoon.
Silhouettes wandered around, minding their own business. The four wolves grew closer to the village. Wolves and cats stared in amazement at their arrival. Reptilian creatures (dragons) of many sizes flew down to greet them before gliding off once more. As they neared the village center (the tree) wolves, cats and dragons cheered, feeling honoured at the return of the alpha and his friends.
The four climbed the ladder (which was surprisingly easy given that they were more like slightly steep steps) and entered the treehouse. It was much roomier on the inside. One might even say impossibility roomy. Magic, after all, seems to like defying what is possible. A table stood in the middle of the room. Pictures adorned the wooden walls of the circular chamber. Carved into the tree were three short hallways leading to separate parts of the treehouse. Another ladder was leant against the wall, giving access to the upper levels of the structure. A large bookcase was positioned next to it, holding old documents written by Platinumcoat before the journey to earth.
Gold took a deep breath before letting out a short sigh. "Ah. It feels so good to be back."
"Yes. Yes it does." Platinumcoat added.
"Oh my... I have duties to attend to. I'll see you all tomorrow maybe." With that, Rosewolf rushed off.
"Well, I'm sure I have plenty of stories to tell Amphitrite when I get home. I'll see you guys around." Shardlight left in the direction of Tundratown.
"You know, I still need to kill him for suggesting that we break protocol back there. I guess I'll do it tomorrow." Spoke Platinumcoat with an undertone of frustration.
"I never thought you were one to procrastinate." Joked Goldmoon "on a more serious note, you two probably shouldn't stay at each others throats."
"... Night, Gold." Said Platinumcoat before retreating through the entrance to his lab hidden in a room under the rug.
"Night." Gold replied. Before heading to bed, he felt like seeing the beautiful, starry sky. It had been the first time in a month since he had seen it like this. The two moons hung in the night sky like giant ornaments.
The smaller and more distant of the two was the crystal moon. A moon composed of a range of different crystals. The moon would glow a different colour, changing once every month for 11 months until eventually, on the twelfth month, it would disappear completely. It is said that being born under a specific coloured moon would determine your elemental magic. Was there any truth behind it? Gold didn't know.
At last, an hour had passed and Goldmoon was tired. The stars had been a beautiful sight but it was time to sleep. He headed indoors to go to bed.
It's orange, hellish eyes had been watching him the entire time. As the wolf went inside, it chuckled. "You sleep in your safety for now. It is only a matter of time before the hour of darkness is upon you." It turned to the rest of the civilization. "All of you." And with that, it disappeared into the shadows behind it.
