A week later, y/n fulfilled her promise to herself of going to the bookstore again. With even more money that time and the intention of buying even more books than she did her first visit there, y/n made her way to the bus stop.
Although grateful that she had time that week, she was disappointed that her sister, unlike her, was unable to escape the wrath of homework and was not able to go with her to the bookstore. "I'm sorry y/n, I can't make it. I have an examination tomorrow. The marks this time are worth more than half of my final grade. I cannot afford to fail. Maybe next week when my examinations are done?" y/n remembered her sister's exact words.
"I guess I'll have to go myself then," y/n said to herself, still grateful that she still had a chance to go, unlike her unfortunate sister. However, the fact that her sister could not go did not mean that y/n did not have to run some kind of errand for her. y/n's sister had given her a list of books to search for in the bookstore and she had given the girl instructions to look for those books and purchase them with the extra money she had given her. It was extra work for y/n but the girl was still fine with it. Her sister had allowed her to spend whatever money she had left, leaving more money for y/n to purchase her own books. To y/n, free money was the best kind of money.
When the bus arrived at the stop, y/n boarded the bus and paid for the ride with her T-card. She found a seat near the back of the bus, away from the boarding passengers and decided to listen to some music. Placing her earbuds into her ears and putting her Spotify on shuffle, the song that was shuffled first was "Jam & Butterfly" by DPR LIVE, Crush and eaj. Hearing one of her favourite soft songs play by chance, y/n smiled in delight as she allowed herself to drown in the soft lyrics of the song.
About half an hour later, the bus arrived at the bus stop close to the bookstore. y/n alighted and stepped off the bus. She made her way to the bookstore and pushed the door of the bookstore open. y/n whispered softly as she pushed the door open so as to not disturb the beautiful peace in the bookstore, "I'm back like I promised last week!"
The owner of the store rushed out to greet the girl. "Welcome back, you really did not lie about wanting to come back. Take a look around, I just finished shelving a few new shipments of books!" The owner said to her, a smile on her face as soon as she saw the girl.
y/n took her time to browse the shelves, having already familiarised herself with the way the books were organised on her previous visit. She ran her hands over the thick spines of the books as she always did when she searched for the books that her sister had requested her to purchase on her behalf. The smell of books hung in the air. It was a smell that oddly soothed y/n and made her feel at home.
y/n had only managed to find half of the books on the list that her sister had given her. She was carrying 6 books thick books that could have weighed 500g each, it was heavier than what her one arm could handle. y/n decided to put the stack of books down and find her own books.
She brushed her fingers past the spines of the books once again in search of new titles. Usually, y/n felt that finding books to read was not an issue, it was easy to her as she was someone who read a large variety of books, the genre did not really matter to her. However, that day, y/n was having much trouble finding books that piqued her interest. It was as though there was nothing to read at all. "That's impossible, the owner said that she had just shelved some new books but why are there seemingly lesser books on the shelves now? What I saw last week was so much more than what is in the store now? Could it be that people have already borrowed majority of the books?" y/n questioned, wondering aloud.
y/n was about to ask the owner of the bookstore about the shortage of books but before she could even go to the counter, something behind the last shelf caught her eye. She walked towards the last shelf and looked at the ground. The 6 books that y/n had found for her sister were neatly stacked on top of each other on the ground. That was nothing strange but the problem was y/n had placed the stack of books on the top of a shelf near the entrance of the bookstore. So why, why was the stack of books at the back of the store? Moreover, a book was missing from the stack.
