After what seemed like an eternity of studying and changing classes, the ball finally rang signalling the start of their lunch break. As soon as their Math teacher released them, the students ran as though their lives depended on whether they got to the cafeteria first or not. Hueningkai and y/n took their time and talked on the way to the cafeteria.
By the time the pair had made it to the cafeteria, y/n had persuaded Hueningkai to go with her to the bookstore and even pay for any book she wanted to buy. Hueningkai regretted playing a game of 'Rock, Scissors, Paper' with y/n and betting that he would win. He finally knew why his parents had warned him against being complacent and overconfident even in the smallest of things.
After getting their food, y/n and Hueningkai headed to their table to start eating. y/n stabbed a carrot slice with her fork and put it in her mouth. She chewed on it and swallowed. Hueningkai silently finished his jjajangmyeon. A few moments later, their friend and cafeteria table mate Beomgyu came and sat down after saying "hi". He picked up his utensils and started eating.
Soon, every piece of food on their plates was gone. " Since the KSATs are over in a few months and we will all go our separate ways, what are you guys planning to do after graduation? Have you gone for counselling with Ms Lee yet?" Beomgyu asked Hueningkai and y/n, breaking the silence between the three.
" I'm probably going to audition for an idol company. You know, debut in a group like BTS. That or go to college," Hueningkai replied. y/n heard how certain her best friend was about what he wanted to do. She thought about herself. It hit her hard that there was really nothing specific that she wanted to do that she had in mind. Despite the many counselling sessions she had with her homeroom teacher Ms Lee, y/n still had no idea what she wanted to do. She had nothing she liked besides books and K-Pop but it was not like she could major with any of those. She was not strong in any particular subject either, she was barely managing average scores, even in Korean.
Shaking her head, y/n told Beomgyu that she had nothing in mind. From the tone of her voice, Beomgyu could tell that y/n did not feel too good about not knowing what to do. "Don't worry. I'm sure that if you keep doing what makes you happy and finding new things to do, you'll eventually find something you want to do," Beomgyu reassured the girl. He went on to say that he shared the same ambition as Hueningkai, jokingly saying that he would audition for the same companies as him.
As much as Beomgyu was joking and laughing, y/n did not feel like laughing at all. All she could think about was how she did not have any plan for herself, just living as the days went by. Seeing how other people were so fixed and certain about where they were gong and where they wanted to go, y/n felt lost in her future and present. She had no idea where she was going.
Her friends saw how upset she was so they tried to lighten the mood. Beomgyu even called himself 'stupid' for bringing up something that made his friend so sad. y/n shook it off and plastered a fake smile on her face to not make her friends worry about her. When they asked her if she was fine, she replied, "I'm fine, don't worry."
After lunch, they walked back to class and y/n eventually tucked the problem away in a deep corner of her heart for her future self to worry about when the topic was brought up again. The bell rang just as they stepped into class and it was time for the students to go through another round of mindless studying.
The period after recess was English. For the students in the class, it was one of the harder subjects they had to learn. After all, many of them grew up speaking Korean and in South Korea. They dreaded English lessons, it was hard and boring. The entire lesson was just taking notes on words and memorising their meanings.
At the end of the brain-numbing lesson, the students felt tired. It was 2pm and they had a 30 minute break before their their last study hall session. y/n felt as though she would drop dead any time but she knew that she needed to stay awake until 6pm, the end of school. Ms Lee walked in again and told everyone to start studying. "Oh well, back to another boring study session..." y/n rolled her eyes as she shifted her focus to the philosophy textbook on her desk.
When Ms Lee finally picked up her things and left the class at the end of study hall, everyone packed up and started going home. y/n ,at that point, felt burned out. "You want to go to that noraebang (𝘬𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘰𝘬𝘦) place downtown?" Hueningkai asked y/n. Feeling that she needed a pick-me-up, y/n willingly agreed.
On their way out of the school, the pair bumped into Beomgyu and his older brothers, Yeonjun and Soobin. "Hyung, we're going to a karaoke place downtown. Do you want to come with us?" Hueningkai asked Yeonjun. "Huening-ah, how many times have I told you to drop the honorifics? You know 'hyung' makes me feel old, " Yeonjun complained as Soobin and Beomgyu rolled their eyes behind him. In the end, the Yeonjun, Soobin and Beomgyu agreed to follow them to the karaoke place.
As soon as they got to the karaoke place, Yeonjun impatiently handed the cashier the money and ran towards their room. As always, he was the first to sing. Several rounds of singing, Yeonjun was still at it. He had been singing a mix of ballads and hype songs, dancing and singing his heart out in the small room. This was a normal sight for everyone else, having all experienced going to karaoke with Yeonjun, another aspiring idol. He was occasionally joined by Soobin, Beomgyu and Hueningkai. y/n felt awkward and sat in one corner watching the passionate aspiring idols.
After their time for karaoke was up, everyone went their separate ways, y/n heading home, tired from the whole day. The only thing on her mind when she got home was sleep. After a quick shower, she slipped into her nightwear and collapsed on her bed as soon as she felt her soft sheets.
