A fourth-year halfblood is in his first potions class of the year. Professor Snape tells everybody that it's time for them to start taking notes, so he reaches into his bag and grabs a spiral-bound notebook and a pen. The pureblood sitting next to him is confused, but shrugs it off. In a small break between notes, however, the halfblood begins fiddling with his pen, and suddenly...

"What is that infernal clicking noise?" Snape snaps angrily.

"Oh, this?" The halfblood boy says innocently. "This is a pen."

Later that day
The halfblood is fidgeting with his pen later that day, at dinner. Suddenly, the Great Hall quiets down so Dumbledore can make an announcement. The boy doesn't notice, however, and is still clicking his pen.
Everybody hears it, and begins staring at him.
Dumbledore begins walking toward the boy.
"What is that?" Dumbledore asks.
"It's a pen," the boy replies. "It's like the muggle equivalent of a quill, but it doesn't need to be dipped in ink every few words."
"Ingenious!" Dumbledore exclaims, holding the pen. "The things muggles come up with! And it clicks too!"
