Trouble at Vocans

Only the occasional rumble from the wheels on the uneven road could be heard. The Foxes, with their muskets loaded and primed, followed the wagons in a circle with Cress's regiment of the dwarves. Fletcher, in the middle of the circle, walked alongside the middle carriage, both Blaze and Gale in his hands. His eyeglass was strapped on since he needed the stone to see through Athena, who was gliding ahead, her sharp eyes scanned for enemies.

"Time to swap Fletcher." Othello called from the middle carriage. "I am going to send Pria out to watch."

Fletcher was too tired to answer, so he gave an order and the Foxes and Cress's regiment moved towards the wagons and a fresh dwarven regiment emerged from the wagons and took their positions. Fletcher called Athena back and slipped off his eyeglass. The strap snagged his ear and Fletcher was sure a bruise was forming. He sat down on the hard wooden floor of the wagon and winced as he felt a splinter. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Cress climb onto the rear of the wagon, her legs dangled in the air.

"How much longer?" he asked the driver as Athena fluttered down to him.

"Almost there my lord, nearing to Vocans." the driver replied in a gruff voice.

Fletcher stood up tall, well as tall as you could get in a wagon. Fletcher wanted to have, at least, a look at Vocans. He went to the rear and jumped off. He infused Athena and began to walk away from the party.

"Where are you going Fletcher?" asked Cress, who had jumped down and walked over to him.

"I am going to see Vocans." he replied curtly. He went past the dwarven circle waited for all the wagons to pass. Cress followed him, but not before she told one of the dwarves of their intentions and not to be alarmed to find that they were gone.

After all of them had passed Fletcher summoned Ignatius, a bead of sweat rolled due to the effort. Then Ignatius appeared in a ball of light. He snorted angrily at him.

"I am sorry buddy for keeping you infused, I had no other choice." Ignatius didn't think much about the excuse. He lay down and with a swish of his head, beckoned them on.

"Why did you want to come with me Cress?" Fletcher turned and asked. "I thought you hated flying."

"I know but I wanted to see Vocans and I cannot allow a high and mighty royal to go off on his own." Cress said teasingly, but she got on.

Ignatius stood up and, with a few steps, sprang into the air.

They reached Vocans a few minutes later. As Ignatius came to a landing on the top of the north-west tower, he saw a light just below where they were landing. As they landed, they heard muffled whispers. Afraid of intruders, Fletcher whispered to Cress to get the teachers and gave an order to Ignatius to carry Cress down. Cress, who heard the tone of his whispering, didn't argue but summoned Tosk to accompany him. Then they were gone.

"Ok lets go." Fletcher said, more to himself. He got down from the tower and walked down the stairs to the room quietly. As he went down, the whispers became audible.

"Gag him. Don't let him make any sound. Then let's teach him a lesson."

Fletcher reached the end of the stairs and could make out the silhouette of the figures, one of them squirming on the ground. Fletcher had drawn Blaze and fed mana into a shield.

"STOP! WHO GOES THERE!" Fletcher yelled.

The figures spun around and an already etched fireball slammed into his shield. Even if Fletcher was immune to fire, he was thankful that the spell wasn't fed much mana and was released early. Before they can react Fletcher absorbed his shield and etched a spell he had seen from James Baker's journal. As he fed mana to it, the spell exploded outward and froze everyone. Fletcher continued to feed mana into it as he and Tosk strided towards the figures. Suddenly, the door burst open and Arcturus ran in. He took in the scene and glowered.

"What are you doing here?"Arcturus yelled at the figures. As Fletcher studied them, he realised that they were the new first-years. Fletcher released the spell and they collapsed on the ground. Cress stormed in as well, her blunderbuss in her hands. Tosk, when he saw her, went over and circled her legs. Fletcher looked down and saw that there was six of them. Fletcher then looked at victim, and realised that his face was badly burned, probably by a fire spell before Fletcher came and stopped them from delivering another one

Arcturus leaned down and grabbed a boy by his lapels.

"What. Is. Going. On?" he shook the boy with every word.

"I... I..."

"All of you, go to my office and wait there until I come." he said in a dangerously soft voice. After a few seconds of no response, he growled: "Now..."

They scrambled away. A pudgy one bumped his head on the door and fell back down. The whole entire thing would have been funny if it wasn't for the situation. Arcturus turned back to Fletcher.

"If it isn't Lord Raleigh! Welcome back!" he chuckled, but then turned serious. "You two should go back, your men needs you. I am not saying that I am not glad to see you, it is just that they might be in danger. I will take care of the boy, your Drake is waiting for you."

Fletcher turned and saw Ignatius outside of the window, every flap of his wings kept him hovering. After a respectful nod to Arcturus, in which he returned, he and Cress climbed out of the window and onto Ignatius's back. And after one last look that meant so much to his friend, sponsor, teacher and supporter, Ignatius flew off into the night and followed the road to Corcillum.

Cress suddenly wrapped her arms around Fletcher's waist, he assumed it was because of the flying, but he fought the urge to squirm in discomfort. Ignatius felt the feeling from Fletcher and yapped.

He wished that instead of Cress that was there, her arms around his waist...

He just wished it was Sylva.
